American League Batter of the Day—Elvis Andrus of the Rangers hit a three-run homer and doubled in the 9-5 win over the Rays. Andrus went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five total runs.

National League Batter of the Day—Austin Hedges of the Padres homered, doubled and went 2-for-4, driving in four runs, in the 6-2 win over the Cubs.

Streak—Albert Pujols of the Angels has now earned Box-Toppers points for 17 straight seasons—tied for the seventh-longest streak in Box-Toppers tracking history—after earning his first Player of the Game honors of the season Tuesday. He also hit his 599th career home run.

Pujols (HR 2-4 R 3BI in the 9-3 win over the Braves) earned his first Box-Toppers points in 2001 with the Cardinals and now has 183.3 career points, seventh among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails sixth-ranked player Alex Rodriguez (187.0).

In career Box-Toppers points Pujols is second among all batters (behind Rodriguez), third among all active players (behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw’s 194.3 and Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia’s 188.0) and first among all active batters (ahead of second-place Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, who has 145.9).

Pujols’ best season was 2009 with the Cardinals when he had 16.7 Box-Toppers points, leading all NL batters and ranking eighth among all players that season. Pujols has led NL batters in Box-Toppers points five times—leading the league in season Box-Toppers points more than any other batter—all with the Cardinals:

  • In 2003, he had 16.5 points.
  • In 2004—15.9.
  • 2008—15.2.
  • 2009—16.7.
  • 2010—15.4.

In 2016, Pujols had 8.0 Box-Toppers points with the Angels, fourth among AL designated hitters.

Pujols’ 17 consecutive seasons earning Box-Toppers points is tied for the second-longest currently active streak. Only Carlos Beltran of the Astros (19 seasons) has a longer streak among active players (his streak is tied for the longest since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995). Pujols streak is tied with Sabathia’s 17-season streak.

Pujols’ 17-season streak is tied with seven other players. (See Box-Toppers season streaks chart for details.)

Scoring—Ray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Skoglund earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Andrus and Hedges each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Also Monday, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings, edged within 1.0 Box-Toppers point of season leader, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Estrada pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing one hit and three walks, in the 3-2 win over the Mariners.

Estrada earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.0 for the season. He becomes the 43rd player this season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. He ranks 43rd among all players and 17th among AL pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Giants. Kershaw did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because when he exited the Dodgers trailed 1-0, before scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win.

Kershaw earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 22.7 for the season, maintaining his spot in second place among all players and among NL pitchers. He moves within 1.0 Box-Toppers point of overall leader, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer (23.7). Scherzer assumed the lead on Aug. 25. Previously, Kershaw led from May 7.

Madison Bumgarner, who started the game for the Giants, was in line to win Player of the Game (and overall Player of the Day) until the Dodgers made their ninth-inning comeback. Bumgarner (7IP H 0R 0BB 10K ND) had a Box-Toppers game score of +16.0 (Kershaw had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0). But because the bullpen blew the lead and the Giants lost, Bumgarner earns no Box-Toppers points, despite the impressive performance.

Bumgarner has 13.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, 18th among all players and 13th among NL pitchers.

Kershaw now has 182.0 career Box-Toppers points, seventh-most among players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. He trails sixth-ranked player Albert Pujols of the Angels (182.0) by just 0.3 points. He trails fifth-ranked player (and active career pitching leader) CC Sabathia of the Yankees (184.0) by just 2.0 points. (See the updated list of the top 20 players in career Box-Toppers points since 1995 on the home page.)

National League Batter of the Day—Freddie Freeman of the Braves homered, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-3 win over the Mets.

American League Batter of the Day—Elvis Andrus of the Rangers homered and went 3-for-4, scoring twice, in the 3-2 win over the Angels.

Notable—Two other players with more than 10 Box-Toppers points also earned Player of the Game honors Monday:

  • Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel (7IP 4H 2R BB 6K W in the 5-2 win over the Reds) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.0 for the season, 19th among all players and 14th among NL pitchers.
  • Carlos Martinez of the Cardinals became the seventh pitcher this season to earn Player of the Game honors for batting (2B 1-1 R 2BI in the 5-3 win over the Rockies). It is the eighth time this season a pitcher has earned Player of the Game honors for batting (Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals did it twice). Martinez earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season. He becomes the 44th player this season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points and ranks 33rd among all players and 17th among NL pitchers.

Porcello—Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello earned Player of the Game honors Monday while also picking up his Major League-leading 21st win.

Porcello (CG 4H 2R 0BB 7K W in the 5-2 win over the Orioles) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, but still has just 8.0 points for the season. Despite ranking first in wins, he ranks 76th among all players in Box-Toppers points, 26th among AL pitchers. (More on Porcello here: Why does wins leader Rick Porcello have so few Box-Toppers points?)

Porcello had a Box-Toppers game score Monday of +8.0, his highest game score during any of his 21 wins. But it still wasn’t enough to earn him his first overall or league Player of the Day honor of the season (he lost Player of the Day Monday to Marco Estrada of the Blue Jays who had a Box-Toppers game score of +11.0). So Porcello still hasn’t earned any Box-Toppers bonus points this season in the eight times he earned Player of the Game honors.

This was also Porcello’s first Player of the Game honor in a month. He last earned Player of the Game on Aug. 19, even though he has earned the win in three more games since then.

Scoring—Estrada earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Kershaw earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Freeman and Andrus each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Also Saturday, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw extends his dominant lead in season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Hammel struck out six over seven innings, allowing two runs and one hit, in the 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

American League Player of the Day—Elvis Andrus of the Rangers hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-4, scoring three times, in the 10-4 win over the Mariners.

National League Batter of the Day—Adam Duvall of the Reds hit a three-run homer in the 6-3 win over the Nationals.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Saturday because the overall AL Player of the Day was batter Elvis Andrus.

Rankings—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw extended his dominant lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Kershaw (6IP 3H 0R 4K W in the 4-0 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 15.0 for the season. He leads second-place player Jose Fernandez of the Marlins (9.7) by 5.3 Box-Toppers points, meaning Fernandez would need to earn Player of the Day honors three times to pass Kershaw.

Kershaw also now has 174.3 career Box-Toppers points, maintaining his rank of seventh place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails sixth-place player Albert Pujols of the Angels (176.3). (See home page for updated Box-Toppers “All-time” top 20 player rankings.)

Kershaw had a Box-Toppers game score Saturday of +6.0, the same as Player of the Day Jason Hammel. But Hammel won Player of the Day over Kershaw on a tiebreaker—he had more innings pitched (7 vs. 6).

Debut—Matt Reynolds of the Mets made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors.

Reynolds (PH 1-1 BI in the 6-4 win over the Marlins) made his Major League debut May 17 and was playing in his ninth career game. He is the 3,650th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

Reynolds now ranks second in career Box-Toppers points among all players named Matt Reynolds. The other Matt Reynolds, a middle relief pitcher, has 2.0 Box-Toppers points earned in 2010 and 2011, while playing for the Rockies. Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Reynolds (the middle reliever) was released by the Diamondbacks.

Scoring—Hammel earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Andrus earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Duvall earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera, Reds' Brandon Phillips among leaders in All-Star voting and Box-Toppers standings

Box-Toppers all-stars graphic.png

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers and Brandon Phillips of the Reds are among players who are leaders both in fan All-Star voting and Box-Toppers standings.

In fact, Box-Toppers standings roughly coincide with about half of the players currently leading in All-Star voting.

Major League Baseball released All-Star vote standings for the National League on June 9 and released American League standings on June 3. The current leaders by league and by position are listed in the far right columns in the chart below. Note that five of the players currently leading in All-Star voting also rank first in their position in the league in Box-Toppers points. Three others rank second.

Overall, it's either a very good showing by fans or a decent affirmation of Box-Toppers' worth as a measure of player performance. Or it could be that we're all wrong.

Fans and Box-Toppers generally agree on these players:

  • AL 1B: Chris Davis of the Orioles.
  • AL 2B: Robinson Cano of the Yankees.
  • AL 3B: Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers.
  • AL CA: Joe Mauer of the Twins. (Mauer ranks second among AL catchers in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season, but leads among AL catchers when both the 2012 and 2013 seasons are combined.)
  • AL OF: Mike Trout of the Angels. (Trout ranks seventh among AL outfielders in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season, but leads among AL outfielders over the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons.)
  • AL DH: David Oritz of the Red Sox.
  • NL 1B: Brandon Phillips of the Reds.
  • NL CA: Buster Posey of the Giants. (Posey is second to Brian McCann of the Braves in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season and the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons, but it is a pretty close race.)
  • NL OF: Bryce Harper of the Nationals. (Harper is second among NL outfielders in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season.)

There are a few instances in which Box-Toppers ranked a player lower than fans:

  • AL SS: Elvis Andrus of the Rangers ranks ninth in Box-Toppers points among AL shortstops for the 2013 season. He has 1.0 point this season and only 2.0 the past two seasons.
  • AL OF: Adam Jones of the Orioles ranks 13th in Box-Toppers points among AL outfielders.
  • AL OF: Torii Hunter of the Angels ranks 55th in Box-Toppers among AL outfielders. Though Hunter has scored no Box-Toppers points this season, he ranks second among AL outfielders in Box-Toppers points over the period of 2008-2013.
  • NL 1B: Joey Votto of the Reds ranks 10th in Box-Toppers points among NL first basemen.
  • NL SS: Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies ranks fifth among NL shortstops.
  • NL 3B: Pablo Sandoval of the Giants ranks seventh among NL third basemen.
  • NL OF: Justin Upton of the Braves ranks 20th among NL outfielders.
  • NL OF: Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals ranks 28th among NL outfielders.

There are only a few obvious snubs by Box-Toppers measures, but there are still a couple of weeks before All-Star voting closes to fix the problems:

  • NL 1B: Should be Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks. Goldschmidt leads all NL batters in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season with 8.7. He leads NL first basemen in Box-Toppers points for 2013 and over the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons. He is second among NL first basemen in All-Star voting with over 900,000 votes, more than 600,000 behind Votto.
  • NL SS: Should be Everth Cabrera of the Padres. Cabrera leads NL shortstops in Box-Toppers points for 2013 and over the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons. He's not in the top five among NL shortstops in All-Star voting.
  • NL OF: Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies should be among the top three. He is currently seventh in All-Star voting with 955,000—Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals, currently third in voting among NL outfielders, has 1,550,000. Gonzalez leads all NL outfielders in Box-Toppers points for both the 2013 season and the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons.
  • NL CA: Buster Posey leads in fan voting, but Brian McCann of the Braves has very narrow Box-Toppers points leads over Posey. But it hardly matters since Posey has nearly 2 million fan votes and McCann has barely 500,000.

The chart below shows Box-Toppers points leaders by position so far through the 2013 season. The middle columns look at players over the longer run, seeing who is leading in Box-Toppers points for the combined 2012 and 2013 seasons. And the far right columns show the current All-Star fan vote leaders, with their rank by position in Box-Toppers points in the 2013 season.

The chart also includes Box-Toppers points leaders among starting, middle and relief closing pitchers, even though fans don't get to vote on those.

Voting for the All-Star game is open until July 4.
