About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Friday, Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers rises to third place among National League batters in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Wojciechowski struck out six over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

Wojciechowski earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 192nd among all players and 51st among American League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Kevin Newman of the Pirates hit two home runs—a three-run shot and a walk-off, two-run homer—in the 6-5 win over the Reds. Newman went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in five runs.

American League Batter of the Day—Mike Ford of the Yankees homered, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 14-7 win over the Rangers.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Kevin Newman.

Bellinger—Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers rises to third place among NL batters in 2019 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Bellinger (HR 2-3 2R BI in the 9-2 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.2 for the season, most among the 14 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday. He ranks 35th among all players and third among NL batters, behind Marcell Ozuna of the Cardinals (12.0) and Christian Yelich of the Brewers (11.7).

Bellinger got off to a fast start in 2019, leading all players in Box-Toppers season player rankings from April 7 to 14 and was among the top 10 overall players in Box-Toppers points until late June. It appeared as if he would be the first batter among Box-Toppers’ overall top 10 since 2013, when Miguel Cabrera ranked eighth with 16.9 points. (It used to be more routine for batters to rank in the overall top 10: in 2007, four of the top 10 players were batters and in 2006, five of the top 10 were batters.)

However, since Bellinger’s fast start, in which he earned 9.2 points through June 13 and ranked ninth among all players, Bellinger has earned Player of the Game honors only two more times this season—Aug. 1 and Friday.

Despite the second-half drop-off in Box-Toppers points, he still ranks third among NL batters and still has a chance—if he earns Player of the Game honors one more time in the season’s final two days—to finish the season leading NL batters.

Berrios—Twins pitcher Jose Berrios becomes the 49th player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Berrios (6IP 6H 2R 2BB 9K W in the 6-2, seven-inning win over the Royals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 38th among all players and 16th among AL pitchers.

This is Berrios’s second season with 10 points. In 2018, he had 17.8 points with the Twins, ninth among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.

Debut—Shed Long of the Mariners made his Box-Toppers debut Friday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Long (2B 2-4 2R BI in the 4-3 win over the Athletics) made his Major League debut May 11 and was playing in his 40th career game.

Scoring—Wojciechowski earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Newman earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Ford earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
