Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day in baseball’s second day of summer exhibition games.
Montgomery struck out six over five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 6-0 win over the Mets.
Players are preparing for the opening of the pandemic-shortened regular season this week—opening day is Thursday—playing a series of games against other Major League teams.
Montgomery would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Box-Toppers Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Montgomery missed much of 2018 and 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and earned no Box-Toppers points either season. He had 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2017 with the Yankees, 43rd among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers homered and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 9-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
Bellinger would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day in a regular season day. Bellinger earned 11.2 Box-Toppers points in 2019, third among NL batters.
Also earning Player of the Game honors Sunday was White Sox pitcher Ross Detwiler (2IP H 0R 0BB 4K W in the 6-3 win over the Cubs) and Orioles pitcher Thomas Eshelman (4.2IP 4H 0R BB 5K W in the 4-1 win over the Phillies.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Montgomery would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Bellinger would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games.
