About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
In many ways, it would have looked exactly like the entire, overall 2019 season: From about July 25 on in 2019, the Houston Astros were Box-Toppers’ top-ranked team and Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole was Box-Toppers’ top-ranked player. Both also led for the overall 2019 season.
But there would have been key differences. The top National League team for the final 60 games was the New York Mets, ranked second overall. But the Mets ranked 10th in overall 2019 season Box-Toppers team standings, finishing third in the NL East, outside of playoff contention. The Washington Nationals—who led NL teams in 2019, ranked second overall—were ranked six spots lower during the final 60 games, in eighth place overall. The Nationals won the World Series in 2019.
Also, Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg led NL players in Box-Toppers points for the entire 2019 season with 20.7. But over the final 60 games, he had just 7.0 points, fifth-most among NL pitchers over that span. Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom led NL pitchers over the final 60 games with 13.4 Box-Toppers points—he ranked second among NL pitchers over the entire season with 19.1. However, deGrom did win the NL Cy Young Award, based largely on how strongly he finished the 2019 season.
Team Box-Toppers points final 60 games of 2019
The Houston Astros had the most team Box-Toppers points during the final approximately 60 games of the 2019 season (from July 25 on). With the pandemic-shortened 60-game 2020 Major League Baseball season underway, we take a look at how players and teams fared in Box-Toppers points over the final 60 games of the 2019 season, from about July 25 on. In an earlier post, we looked at how teams and players fared in Box-Toppers points over the first 60 games of 2019 (through the games of June 4).
The charts elsewhere on this page show a comparison of how top players fared over the final 60 games vs. the entire 162-game 2019 season. Also shown is how teams fared in Box-Toppers points over the final 60 games compared to the overall season.
Here is a look at select players and teams:
Gerrit Cole and the Astros
Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole led all players for the 2019 season with 32.2 Box-Toppers points, the fourth-highest single-season total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Cole also led players over the final 60 games of the season with 16.1 points, ahead of second-place deGrom’s 13.4. Teammate Justin Verlander ranked a distant second among AL pitchers with 10.7. Verlander also ranked second in the overall 2019 season with 27.5 points.
The Houston Astros led all teams over the entire 2019 season with 158.1 Box-Toppers points, ahead of the second-place Nationals (132.9). The Astros also led in the final 60 games (55.7), ahead of the second-place Mets (50.8) and the second-place AL team, the New York Yankees (46.8).
Josh Hader
One prime example of a player who excelled early in 2019 but whose performance fell off precipitously was Brewers relief pitcher Josh Hader.
He had 17.7 Box-Toppers points for the entire season, which ranked eighth among all players for the entire season, one of the few times a closing pitcher ranked among the season top 10 in Box-Toppers rankings. It was the third-most Box-Toppers points earned in a single-season by a closing pitcher. It far and away led NL closers, more than double the total of second-place Felipe Vazquez of the Pirates (8.7). However, Hader earned just 2.0 Box-Toppers points in the final 60 games of the season, which ranked fifth among NL closers.
While Hader was still selected as NL Reliever of the Year, the Internet Baseball Writers Association of American (IBWAA) selected Kirby Yates of the Padres as top NL reliever. Yates had 7.0 Box-Toppers points in all of 2019, fourth among NL closers. From July 25 on, he had 4.0 points and did not rank among the top five NL closers.
Hader also ranked third among all NL pitchers in 2019 Box-Toppers points, but was not among the 11 NL pitchers who received votes for the 2019 NL Cy Young Award.
Washington Nationals
The World Series-champion Washington Nationals had a down-and-up-and-down-and-up season.
Through the first 60 games, they had 37.4 accumulated points, 15th among all teams. But for the middle 42 games, they had 52.5 points to lead all teams. By comparison, the Astros had 46.8 and the Dodgers had 29.7 over those middle 42 games. However, for the final 60 games of the season, the Nationals had 43.0 Box-Toppers points, which ranked eighth among all teams. Still, the Nationals won enough to qualify for the postseason as an NL Wild Card team and got hot again to beat the Astros in the World Series.
Max Scherzer
The fortunes of the Washington Nationals seemed to be tied to pitcher Max Scherzer, who had the same sort of down-up-down season.
In the first 60 games through June 4, he had just 3.0 Box-Toppers points. In the middle 42 games, from about June 5 to July 24, he had 12.4 points. But in the final 60 games from July 25 on, he had just 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
He did not rank among the top 10 NL pitchers in either the first 60 games or final 60 games of the season, but his 15.4 points did rank eighth among NL pitchers for the entire season. If Scherzer had earned points all season at the pace he did in the middle 42 games of the season, he would have had 50 points in 2019. The highest single-season point total in Box-Toppers tracking history (going back to 1995) is 33.7 by Randy Johnson in both 2000 and 2002.
Nelson Cruz and AL batters
Nelson Cruz of the Twins led AL batters over both the entire season and the final 60 games.
He had 12.5 Box-Toppers points through all of 2019 and 8.0 points through the final 60 games, ahead of second-place Jorge Soler of the Royals (7.2). (Joey Gallo of the Rangers led AL batters through the first 60 games of the season with 6.0.)
Nick Ahmed and NL batters
Nick Ahmed of the Diamondbacks led NL batters over the final 60 games with 6.2 Box-Toppers points, ahead of second-place Kevin Newman of the Pirates (also with 6.2, but ranked second because he had fewer 2018 points than Ahmed—0.0 vs. 5.5).
Ahmed earned all his points in the final 60 games of the season and his 6.2 points ranked 20th among NL batters for all of 2019.
Marcell Ozuna of the Cardinals, who led batters for all of 2019 with 12.0 points had 4.0 points in the final 60 games of the season, 10th among NL batters.
Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers led NL batters through the first 60 games of the season with 8.2, which also ranked eighth among all players. He finished the season third overall with 11.2 points, third among NL batters, earning just 2.0 points in the season’s final 60 games.
Chris Paddack in rookie comparisons
Padres pitcher Chris Paddack earned 15.8 Box-Toppers points in 2019, eighth among NL pitchers, however earned just 3.4 points over the final 60 games of the season.
Through the first 60 games, Paddack ranked fifth among NL pitchers with 7.7 points. His 15.8 points for the season were far and away the most for any rookie in 2019—the next-highest were Eloy Jimenez of the White Sox (7.5) and Pete Alonso of the Mets (7.0), yet Paddack received no votes for NL Rookie of the Year.
Blake Snell
Rays pitcher Blake Snell, who led all players in 2018 with 27.2 Box-Toppers points, ranked seventh among AL pitchers in the first 60 games of 2019 with 7.0 Box-Toppers points.
However, he finished the season with just 10.0 points, 19th among AL pitchers and earned 0.0 points in the final 60 games of the season. Through the entire 2019 season, he ranked second among players whose point total declined the most from the previous season, falling 17.2 points. (Corey Kluber of the Indians had the biggest decline from 2018 to 2019, falling 21.7 points.)
However, if the 2019 season only comprised the final 60 games, Snell would have had the biggest point decline from 2018 (27.2) to 2019 (0.0), falling 27.2 points.
Batters in overall top 10
There were two batters in Box-Toppers overall top 10 players for the final 60 games of the season: Nelson Cruz of the Twins in sixth place with 8.0 points and Jorge Soler of the Royals in 10th place with 7.2.
There was one batter in the overall top 10 for the first 60 games of the season: Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers, who ranked eighth with 8.2 points.
However, there were no batters who ranked among the top 10 for the entire 2019 season. Cruz was the highest-ranked batter, whose 12.5 points ranked 26th overall.
In fact, no batters have ranked among the overall top 10 in season-ending Box-Toppers points since 2013, when Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers ranked eighth with 16.9. However, from 2000 to 2009, batters ranked in Box-Toppers season-ending overall top 10 list 23 times, a period in which batters earned a larger share of Box-Toppers points.
Soler finished the 2019 season with 10.2 points, ranked 44th overall and second among AL batters. Bellinger finished 2019 with 11.2 points, 35th overall and third among NL batters.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

What are those numbers after players' names?
About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
➜ Players are listed by the position they predominantly played when they earned Box-Toppers points (by earning Player of the Game honors).
➜ Players are listed with the team on which they finished the season. Some players played on two or more teams in a single season.
➜ DIPPERS: Players whose Box-Toppers point total declined most from one season to the next, ranked by biggest point decline.
➜ RISERS: Players whose Box-Toppers point total increased most from one season to the next, ranked by biggest point increase.
➜ Note: If players have the same Box-Toppers point total, ties are broken based on which player had more Box-Toppers points in the previous season (or the previous season before that—and so on, if those point totals are tied).
