Los Angeles Dodgers keep lead in Box-Toppers team rankings as 2020 season nears end

The Los Angeles Dodgers maintain their lead in Box-Toppers weekly team rankings for the fifth week.

Here are Box-Toppers 2020 season team rankings, through the games of Thursday, Sept. 17. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Sept 11 to Sept. 17. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of Sept. 10.

Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox maintain their lead among American League teams and the Cincinnati Reds are the week’s hottest team in the penultimate (and also next-to-last) weekly team rankings report of the pandemic-truncated 2020 season. The final team rankings report will be posted after the completion of regular season games Sunday, Sept. 27.

Dodgers players have accumulated 44.3 Box-Toppers points through the games of Sept. 17, picking up 4.5 points in the past week. They also have baseball’s best winning percentage (.706).

The Dodgers lead the second-place team, the San Diego Padres with 42.5 Box-Toppers points. The Padres maintain their second-place rank from last week, picking up 4.0 points in the past week.

The Dodgers are led by pitcher Clayton Kershaw with 6.7 Box-Toppers points, who ranks sixth among NL pitchers. Chris Taylor leads Dodgers batters with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, 11th among NL batters. Twenty different Dodgers players have earned Box-Toppers points so far this season.

The White Sox lead AL teams for the third straight week with 41.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 7.0 points in the past week, rising from fourth to third place overall. The White Sox have the second-best winning percentage among all teams (.660), which is best among AL teams.

The White Sox are led by pitcher Lucas Giolito with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers. Top batter is Eloy Jimenez with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, second among AL batters. Seventeen different White Sox players have earned Box-Toppers points so far this season.

The Cincinnati Reds are the week’s hottest team, picking up 9.5 Box-Toppers points in the past week, rising five spots from 17th to 12th place with 32.9 Box-Toppers points.

The New York Yankees rise into the top 10 among all teams this week, rising from 12th to 10th place with 34.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 8.7 points in the past week, most among AL teams. The Yankees displace the Cleveland Indians from the top 10. The Indians fall from ninth to 11th place with 34.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week.

The Reds and Miami Marlins both rose five spots in Box-Toppers team rankings this week, tied for the biggest jump among all teams. The Marlins rise from 20th to 15th place with 28.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 5.5 points in the past week.

The San Francisco Giants fall the furthest among all teams, dropping four spots from 13th to 17th place with 27.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

The Pittsburgh Pirates maintain 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings for the fifth week with 16.0 Box-Toppers points, earning 2.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
