About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Also Friday, two players rise into Box-Toppers’ season player rankings top 10 list after both earned Player of the Game honors—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer rises to ninth place and Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta rises to 10th place.
Player of the Day—Snell struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 2-0 win over the Mets.
Snell earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, 23rd among all players and 13th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani struck out 10 over six innings, allowing two runs, four hits and no walks, in the 3-2 win over the Mariners.
Ohtani earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 4.4 for the season, 23rd among AL pitchers.
This is Ohtani’s third Player of the Game honor this season and all three have come with him serving as a starting pitcher (April 20, April 26 and Friday). Ohtani has played in 52 of the Angels’ 57 games so far this season—five of them as a starting pitcher and the rest as either a designated hitter or pinch hitter. While Ohtani more frequently serves as the team’s designated hitter, Box-Toppers is now classifying him as only a starting pitcher because all of his Player of the Game honors this season have come as a pitcher (although his April 26 honor was earned for his batting achievements on the day he pitched).
American League Batter of the Day—Yasmani Grandal of the White Sox hit two home runs and went 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 9-8 win over the Tigers.
Grandal has now earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2021. He earned his first points in 2012 with the Padres and now has 27.7 career points, fourth among active AL catchers. His best season was 2016 with the Dodgers when he had 7.2 points, first among NL catchers.
In 2019, he had 2.0 points with the Brewers and in 2020, he had 1.0 point with the White Sox.
National League Batter of the Day—Alex Dickerson of the Giants hit a three-run homer, going 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 8-5 win over the Cubs.
Scherzer—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Scherzer (7.2IP 5H R BB 9K W in the 2-1 win over the Phillies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.7 for the season. He ranks sixth among NL pitchers.
Scherzer also now has 208.9 career Box-Toppers points, fifth-most since 1995 when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player, Astros pitcher Zack Greinke (213.8). Scherzer ranks third among active players in career points, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (243.6) and Greinke (213.8).
Peralta—Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Peralta (7.1IP H R 3BB 9K W in the 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.7 for the season. He ranks seventh among NL pitchers. (Though he and Scherzer both have 7.7 points for the season, Scherzer ranks ahead because he has more 2020 Box-Toppers points—4.0 vs. 2.0.)
Scoring—Snell earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Ohtani earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Grandal and Dickerson each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
