Kaprielian earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 157th among all players and 53rd among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler struck out seven over five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 8-1, six-inning win over the Nationals.
Wheeler earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 14.4 for the season, 20th among all players and 10th among NL pitchers.
Wheeler and Kaprielian both had Box-Toppers game scores Sunday of +10.0. But Kaprielian edged out Wheeler for overall Player of the Day honors because he had more innings pitched—six vs. five.
American League Batter of the Day—Teoscar Hernandez of the Blue Jays hit two home runs and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 6-3 win over the Red Sox.
This is the second straight day Hernandez has won AL Batter of the Day honors, after doing it Saturday (HR 2-2B 4-5 4R 2BI in the 10-0 win over the Red Sox). Hernandez earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for each of the past two days and so has earned 3.0 of his 5.5 total season points during the weekend.
National League Batter of the Day—David Villar of the Giants went 2-for-2, driving in two runs, in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Diamondbacks.
Notable—Marlins pitcher Pablo Lopez becomes the 53rd player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Lopez (7IP 2H 0R 3BB 7K ND in the 4-3, 12-inning win over the Brewers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 45th among all players and 20th among NL pitchers.
This is Lopez’s first season with 10.0 Box-Toppers points. His previous best season was 2021 with the Marlins, when he had 9.4 Box-Toppers points, 29th among NL pitchers.
This is the most players to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points in a season since 2016 when 54 players had 10.0 or more points. Lopez is the 49th pitcher with 10.0 points—that is the second-most pitchers with 10.0 points in any season, behind 2014, when 53 pitchers had 10.0 or more points. (Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.)
Notable—White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn now has 113.8 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.
Lynn (7IP 5H R BB 5K W in the 2-1 win over the Padres) rises to 60th place among all players in career Box-Toppers points since 1995, when player tracking began. With his 1.0 point Sunday, he passes three players on the “all-time” list—Sammy Sosa (113.2), Dan Haren (113.2) and Chris Carpenter (113.3). He trails 59th-ranked player Ervin Santana (114.4). Lynn ranks 17th among active players in career points, seventh among active AL pitchers.
Lynn also now has 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 26th among AL pitchers.
Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Sunday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:
Braves pitcher Dylan Lee (1.1IP 0H 0R BB 2K W in the 5-3 win over the Mets) made his Major League debut Oct. 1, 2021, and was playing in his 47th career game.
Livan Soto of the Angels (2B 3-4 R 2BI in the 8-3 win over the Rangers) made his Major League debut Sept. 17 and was playing in his 15th career game.
