The American League and National League All-Star teams are composed of the players with the highest Box-Toppers point totals by position in each league. In addition to nine batters in each league are the top four starting pitchers in each league and the top closing pitcher.
Verlander, Box-Toppers Player of the Year for 2022, led all players with 26.0 Box-Toppers points. This is his sixth time making Box-Toppers’ season-ending All-Star team, but his first since 2019, after sitting out nearly two complete seasons (2020 and 2021) recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Verlander previously made Box-Toppers All-Star teams:
In 2011, when he was the top-ranked AL pitcher with 24.4 Box-Toppers points with the Tigers.
In 2012, when he was the top-ranked AL pitcher (and top overall player) with 24.8 Box-Toppers points with the Tigers.
In 2016, when he was second among AL pitchers with 24.1 points with the Tigers.
In 2018, when he was second among AL pitchers with 24.1 points with the Astros.
In 2019, when he was second among AL pitchers with 27.5 points with the Astros.
At July’s All-Star break, Verlander ranked second among all players with 15.0 Box-Toppers points, trailing then-top-ranked player Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (17.0). Verlander took the player rankings lead for the first time in 2022 on Aug. 4, passing Ohtani. On Sept. 29, Ohtani regained the lead before Verlander took the lead for good on Oct. 4, the next-to-last day of the season.
Ohtani finished second overall with 24.7 Box-Toppers points and is the second-ranked AL pitcher on Box-Toppers’ year-end All-Star team. While Ohtani earned 5.0 of his points as a designated hitter, he did not qualify to rank among batters because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a starting pitcher in 2022 (13 of 17). (Players must earn more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at a position to be ranked at that position.)
Alcantara leads NL All-Stars
Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara leads all NL players and is the top-ranked pitcher among Box-Toppers’ NL All-Stars. Alcantara earned 21.1 Box-Toppers points in 2022, edging out the next three-ranked NL starters—Brandon Woodruff of the Brewers (20.8), Carlos Rodon of the Giants (19.8) and Julio Urias of the Dodgers (19.4)—all of whom are Box-Toppers’ year-end All-Stars.
Top batters
Pete Alonso of the Mets, who led all batters with 14.9 Box-Toppers points in 2022, is first baseman on Box-Toppers’ year-end NL All-Star team. Alonso ranked 20th among all players.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who led all AL batters with 13.2 Box-Toppers points in 2022, is top-ranked outfielder on Box-Toppers’ year-end AL All-Star team. Judge ranked 28th among all players.
Repeating as All-Stars
J.T. Realmuto of the Phillies has now been a Box-Toppers year-end All-Star for four straight seasons, the longest consecutive streak of any player on the 2022 team. He’s led NL catchers:
In 2019 with 7.0 Box-Toppers points.
In 2020 (the pandemic-shorted season) with 3.5 points.
In 2021 with 7.2 points.
In 2022 with 5.5 points.
There are five other players who made Box-Toppers year-end All-Star teams for a second straight season:
Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox led AL shortstops in 2022 (7.0) and in 2021 (8.5).
Jose Ramirez of Cleveland led AL third basemen in 2022 (11.7) and in 2021 (13.0).
Aaron Judge of the Yankees led AL outfielders in 2022 (13.2) and in 2021 (9.0).
Shohei Ohtani of the Angels is the second-ranked AL starting pitcher in 2022 (24.7) and was the third-ranked AL starting pitcher in 2021 (16.1).
Julio Urias of the Dodgers is the fourth-ranked NL starting pitcher in 2022 (19.4) and was the third-ranked NL starting pitcher in 2021 (19.1).
Mariners, Mets lead all teams
The Seattle Mariners and New York Mets each have three players among Box-Toppers’ year-end All-Stars, tied for the most among all teams.
The Mariners’ All-Stars include:
Ty France, who led AL first basemen with 7.0 Box-Toppers points.
Cal Raleigh, who led AL catchers with 7.5 points.
Julio Rodriguez, who ranked third among AL outfielders with 7.5 points.
The Mets’ All-Stars include:
Pete Alonso, who led NL first basemen with 14.9 points.
Francisco Lindor, who led NL shortstops with 6.7 points.
Mark Canha, who ranked second among NL outfielders with 8.7 points.
Five other teas each have two representatives on the All-Star teams:
Boston Red Sox—Trevor Story, AL 2B; Xander Bogaerts, AL SS.
Houston Astros—Yordan Alvarez, AL DH; Justin Verlander, AL SP.
Colorado Rockies—Charlie Blackmon, NL DH; Daniel Bard, NL CP.
Los Angeles Dodgers—Mookie Betts, NL OF; Julio Urias, NL SP.
St. Louis Cardinals—Nolan Gorman, NL 2B; Tyler O'Neill, NL OF.
Nine of the 14 AL All-Stars made it to the postseason. Nine of the 14 NL All-Stars made it to the postseason.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
