The Los Angeles Angels rise to lead Box-Toppers weekly team rankings report.

Meanwhile, the New York Mets, last week’s overall leader, fall to third place, but still lead National League teams. Also, the New York Yankees are the week’s hottest team.

Here are Box-Toppers 2022 team rankings through games of Thursday, April. 28. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from April. 22 to April 28. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on April 21.

Angels players have accumulated 18.2 Box-Toppers points, most of any team, rising from third place overall last week and picking up 7.2 points in the past week. They lead American League teams for the second straight week.

The Angels are tied with the fifth-best winning percentage (.650), behind:

  • The Mets (.700), third in Box-Toppers team rankings with 16.7 points.

  • The Yankees (.684), second in team rankings with 16.8 points.

  • The Giants (.684), eighth in team rankings with 15.0.

  • The Dodgers (.667), fifth in team rankings with 16.0.

The Angels are led by Shohei Ohtani, whose 5.0 Box-Toppers points leads all players. Ohtani also leads both AL pitchers and AL batters. He has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors three times in 2022, twice as designated hitter (earning 3.0 points) and once as starting pitcher (earning 2.0 points). Nine Angels players have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022. 

The Mets lead NL teams with 16.7 Box-Toppers points, but fall to third overall, after leading all teams last week. They rank just ahead of the second-ranked NL team, the Milwaukee Brewers (16.6 points, fourth overall). The Mets picked up 4.0 points over the past week. The Mets have baseball’s best winning percentage (.700).

The Mets are led by pitcher Tylor Megill (4.7 Box-Toppers points, second among NL pitchers). Top batter is Pete Alonso (1.5 points, 13th among NL batters). Nine Mets players have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2022.

The Yankees are the hottest team of the past week, picking up 8.4 Box-Toppers points in the past week, most of any team, rising from 11th overall to second with 16.8 Box-Toppers points. They also rank second among AL teams, behind the Angels.

The Minnesota Twins made the biggest jump in Box-Toppers team rankings, rising from 25th to 10th place with 13.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up 7.5 in the past week.

The Cleveland Guardians had the biggest drop in the past week, falling 11 spots from ninth to 20th place with 9.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week.

The Cincinnati Reds are in 30th and last place for the second straight week with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
