Cardinals pitcher Jose Quintana is Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Saturday, Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani earns American League Player of the Day honors as a starting pitcher. He maintains second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings, but loses his status to rank among batters because he’s now earned the overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher. And because of this, he falls from first place among AL batters in 2022 Box-Toppers points, giving the lead to Aaron Judge of the Yankees.

In addition Saturday, three other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned Player of the Game honors—Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias maintains seventh place, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove rises to eighth place and Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff rises to 10th place.

Player of the Day—Quintana struck out six over eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 1-0, 11-inning win over the Reds. Quintana did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he exited when the game was in a scoreless tie.

Quintana earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.7 for the season, 48th among all players and 21st among National League pitchers.

Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani is Saturday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

American League Player of the Day—Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani struck out eight over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Mariners.

Ohtani earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 22.7 for the season, second among all players behind Astros pitcher Justin Verlander (24.0). Ohtani also ranks second among AL pitchers behind Verlander.

Ohtani had led AL batters in Box-Toppers points, but lost his status to rank among batters with his Player of the Game honor Saturday. Ohtani has now earned Player of the Game honors 16 times in 2022, 12 as a starting pitcher (earning 17.7 total points) and four as a designated hitter (earning 5.0 total points). To qualify to rank at a certain position, a player must have more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at that position. Ohtani now has exactly 25 percent of his honors as a batter and so, loses his status to be ranked as a batter.

With that, Aaron Judge of the Yankees (11.2 Box-Toppers points) now leads AL batters, followed by Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (10.7).

This is the second time this season Ohtani has fallen below the qualification threshold to rank as a batter. Ohtani led AL batters in Box-Toppers points most of the season until Aug. 9, when he lost his status to be ranked among batters because he earned an overwhelming share of his Player of the Game honors as a starting pitcher (9 of 12). But he regained his status to be ranked among batters Aug. 28, when he earned Player of the Game honors as a batter, giving him four of his 14 honors as a batter, 28.6 percent. Before Saturday, he had four of 15 of his honors as a batter (26.7 percent) and still qualified to rank as a batter.

Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021, third among AL pitchers. While Ohtani also played as both a designated hitter and a starting pitcher in 2021, he was ranked only as a pitcher that season because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher (nine of 12).

Seth Brown of the Athletics is Saturday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Seth Brown of the Athletics hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 8-5 win over the Astros.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Saturday because no NL batter earned Player of the Game honors.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
