The American League and National League All-Star teams are composed of the players with the highest Box-Toppers point totals by position in each league. In addition to nine batters in each league are the top four starting pitchers in each league and the top closing pitcher.
Strider, Box-Toppers Player of the Year for 2023, led all players with 21.1 Box-Toppers points. The three other starting pitchers on Box-Toppers’ year-end NL All-Star team are:
Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins, 17.8 Box-Toppers points, second among NL pitchers, fifth overall.
Freddy Peralta of the Brewers, 17.7 points, third among NL pitchers, sixth overall.
Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks, 16.7 points, fourth among NL pitchers, eighth overall.
(Padres pitcher Blake Snell, winner of the 2023 NL Cy Young Award, is not among the four Box-Toppers NL All-Star pitchers. He finished sixth among NL pitchers with 14.7 Box-Toppers points.)
At July’s All-Star break, Strider ranked third among all players with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, trailing then-top-ranked player Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (13.9) and Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0). Strider took the player rankings lead for the first time in 2023 on Aug. 25, passing Ohtani. On Aug. 26, Ohtani regained the lead before Strider took the lead for good on Sept. 13, holding the lead for the final 19 days of the season.
Ohtani finished third overall with 19.4 Box-Toppers points, second among AL pitchers and first among AL batters. Ohtani earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points as a starting pitcher and 9.7 points as a designated hitter and is placed on Box-Toppers All-Star team as the AL’s top DH. In 2022, Ohtani made the Box-Toppers year-end All-Star team as the AL’s second-ranked starting pitcher. (Ohtani won the AL Most Valuable Player Award.)
Bassitt leads AL All-Stars
Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt leads all AL players and is the top-ranked pitcher among Box-Toppers’ AL All-Stars. Bassitt earned 20.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023, second overall behind Strider. The three other starting pitchers on Box-Toppers’ year-end AL All-Star team are:
Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays, 18.7 Box-Toppers points, second among AL pitchers, fourth overall.
Gerrit Cole of the Yankees, 17.0 points, third among AL pitchers, seventh overall. (Cole won the AL Cy Young Award.)
Luis Castillo of the Mariners, 16.1 points, fourth among AL pitchers, ninth overall.
Top batters
While Ohtani led all batters with 19.4 Box-Toppers points, he earned only 9.7 of those as a batter—the rest came as a starting pitcher. Still, those 9.7 points on their own would have been enough for Ohtani to lead AL designated hitters and earn Box-Toppers’ AL All-Star spot at DH.
Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker earned the most Box-Toppers points solely as a batter in 2023, 12.5. That put him second among AL batters, behind Ohtani, and 23rd overall. He is Box-Toppers’ top AL outfielder on the year-end All-Star team.
Pete Alonso of the Mets led NL batters in Box-Toppers points for the second straight season. His 12.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 ranks 28th among all players. He is NL first baseman on Box-Toppers’ year-end NL All-Star team. In 2022, Alonso’s 14.9 points also led NL batters.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees also had 12.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, but ranked 29th overall, just behind Alonso on a tie-breaker—Alonso earned more 2022 points than Judge, 14.9 vs. 13.2. Judge ranked third among AL batters in 2023, second among AL outfielders.
Judge and Ohtani each made Box-Toppers year-end All-Star teams for a third straight season, the longest active streak among all players:
Judge previously led AL outfielders in 2022 (13.2) and in 2021 (9.0).
Ohtani previously was second-ranked AL starting pitcher in 2022 (24.7) and was the third-ranked AL starting pitcher in 2021 (16.1).
Two other players made Box-Toppers year-end All-Star teams for a second straight season—Alonso and Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals, who led NL second basemen in both 2023 (10.0 points) and 2022 (5.0 points).
Brewers lead all teams
The Milwaukee Brewers have the most players among Box-Toppers’ year-end All-Stars with four:
Willy Adames, who led NL shortstops with 6.7 Box-Toppers points.
Christian Yelich, who ranks second among NL outfielders with 9.2 points.
Freddy Peralta, who ranks third among NL starting pitchers with 17.7 points.
Devin Williams, who led NL closing pitchers with 8.0 points.
Two teams each have three players among Box-Toppers’ year-end All-Stars—the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves.
Here are the three Astros players:
Jose Altuve, who leads AL second basemen with 7.5 points.
Kyle Tucker, who leads AL outfielders with 12.5 points.
Chas McCormick, who ranks third among AL outfielders with 7.5 points.
Here are the three Braves players:
Ronald Acuna Jr., who leads NL outfielders with 10.7 points. (Acuna won the NL Most Valuable Player Award.)
Marcell Ozuna, who leads NL designated hitters with 7.5 points.
Spencer Strider, who leads NL starting pitchers with 21.1 points.
Four other teams each have two representatives on the All-Star teams:
Los Angeles Angels—Brandon Drury, AL 1B; Shohei Ohtani, AL DH.
New York Yankees—Aaron Judge, AL OF; Gerrit Cole, AL SP.
Toronto Blue Jays—Chris Bassitt, AL SP; Kevin Gausman, AL SP.
New York Mets—Pete Alonso, NL 1B; Francisco Alvarez, NL CA.
Seven of the 14 AL All-Stars made it to the postseason. Ten of the 14 NL All-Stars made it to the postseason.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
