Box-Toppers’ leaderboard overview

Here are Box-Toppers points category leaders over different time frames. Overall leaders and leaders for AL and NL pitchers and batters are shown for 2022, for 2021-22 (past two seasons), for 2017-22 (past six seasons) and for 1995-2022 (“all-time,” since the start of Box-Toppers tracking). Each top-ranked player is shown with their category timeframe-leading Box-Toppers point (BTP) total.

NOTE: Players are listed with their playing status at the close of 2022. Only active players are included in the 2022, 2021-22 and 2017-22 lists. All players, including retired and released players, are included in the “all-time” list, 1995-2022. Since retired and released players have no current team or league affiliation, there are no separate AL and NL lists for 1995-2022 leaders—all players are grouped into a single batting or pitching list.

Max Scherzer, who led five of the leaderboards at the close of 2021, most of any player, is now one of six players to lead two of the 18 leaderboards after the 2022 season.

Here is a look at leaders in Box-Toppers’ main 18 leaderboards—the Box-Toppers points leaders broken down by time (2022, 2021-22, 2017-22 and 1995-2022), position (batters and pitchers) and league (American League and National League).

Mets pitcher Scherzer leads all players over the past six seasons with 104.6 Box-Toppers points from 2017-22. He also tops the leaderboard for National League pitchers over that span.

Five other players also lead two of the leaderboards. They are:

  • Astros pitcher Justin Verlander leads all players in 2022 (26.0 Box-Toppers points) and also leads American League pitchers in 2022. Verlander signed with the Mets for 2023.

  • Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani leads all players over the past two seasons (40.8 points over 2021-22) and also leads AL pitchers over that span.

  • Randy Johnson leads all players in career Box-Toppers points (282.5 from 1995-2022) and also leads all pitchers over that span. Johnson retired in 2009. (Johnson started his career before Box-Toppers tracking began. If his entire career from 1988 were tracked, rough projections put his career Box-Toppers point total at 385.)

  • Jose Ramirez of the Guardians leads AL batters over the past two seasons (22.2 over 2021-22) and over the past six seasons (45.7 over 2017-22).

  • Pete Alonso of the Mets leads NL batters in 2022 (14.9 points) and over the past two seasons (17.9 points over 2021-22).

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

These six players each top one of the leaderboards:

  • Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole leads AL pitchers over the past six seasons (102.4 points over 2017-22).

  • Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters over the past season (13.2 points in 2022).

  • Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara leads NL pitchers over the past season (21.1 points in 2022).

  • Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias leads NL pitchers over the past two seasons (38.5 points over 2021-22).

  • Mookie Betts of the Dodgers leads NL batters over the past six seasons (42.8 points over 2017-22).

  • Albert Pujols of the Cardinals leads all batters in career Box-Toppers points (207.8 from 1995-22). Pujols retired at the end of 2022.

Last season, at the close of 2021, Scherzer led five of the 18 main leaderboards, most of any player, while Cole led four, second-most. Scherzer led:

  • Most points in 2021 (25.1).

  • Most points over 2016-21 (120.3).

  • Most points in 2021 by NL pitcher (25.1).

  • Most points over 2020-21 by NL pitcher (29.1).

  • Most points over 2016-21 by NL pitcher (120.3).

Box-Toppers maintains separate AL and NL categories for three of the main leaderboards—2022, 2021-22 and 2017-22. But the 1995-2022 “all-time” leaderboard includes players who are retired, released or not currently affiliated with a team, so all players are grouped into single pitching leader or batting leader lists with no separate league affiliations.
