▪️ A B-T look at upcoming pitching matchups.

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

Crawford struck out three over three scoreless, hitless, middle relief innings, allowing no walks and earning the win, in the 4-1 win over the Marlins.

Crawford would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Crawford earned 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 79th among American League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Pirates pitcher JT Brubaker struck out four over three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 5-2 win over the Twins.

Brubaker had a Box-Toppers game score Sunday of +6.0, same as Crawford. But Crawford won overall Player of the Day honors because he earned the win in his game, while Brubaker picked up a no-decision. Crawford also beat another pitcher earning Player of the Game with a +6.0 game score—Yankees pitcher Matt Krook (3IP H 0R 0BB 4K ND in the 10-6 win over the Braves)—and also ranked ahead of him because Crawford earned the win while Krook picked up a no-decision.

Brubaker would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Brubaker earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

Luis Liberato of the Padres is Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

National League Batter of the Day—Luis Liberato of the Padres hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 10-3 win over the Athletics.

Liberato made his Major League debut Sept. 10, 2022, and appeared in seven games, but has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Joey Gallo of the Twins is Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

American League Batter of the Day—Joey Gallo of the Twins homered and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 6-2 win over the Tigers.

Gallo earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval is Box-Toppers in Sunday’s spring training win over the Reds.

Notable—Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among the 17 earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Sandoval (3IP 2H R 0BB 6K ND in the 8-5 win over the Reds) earned 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 34th among AL pitchers.

In Sunday’s 17 games, 10 who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining seven players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Crawford would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Brubaker would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Liberato and Gallo would have each earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
