Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.
Boyd struck out seven over three innings, allowing one run, one hit and no walks, in the 16-3 win over the Cardinals.
Boyd would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Boyd earned no Box-Toppers points in 2022, appearing in 10 games with the Giants and Mariners. He earned 2.0 points in 2021 with the Tigers.
National League Player of the Day—Luis Torrens of the Cubs hit two home runs and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 5-2 win over the Brewers.
Torrens would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Torrens earned no Box-Toppers points in 2022 with the Mariners. He earned 3.0 points in 2021 with the Mariners.
American League Batter of the Day—Aledmys Díaz of the Athletics doubled and went 3-for-4, driving in four runs, in the 9-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Luis Torrens.
Notable—White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among those who earned Player of the Game honors Tuesday.
Lynn (4IP 2H 0R BB 5K W in the 5-2 win over the Brewers) earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 26th among AL pitchers. He has 113.8 career Box-Toppers points, 16th among active players.
One of Tuesday’s 12 games ended in a tie, so no Player of the Game honors were awarded in that one (see chart below for game details). In Tuesday’s 11 other games, eight who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining three players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.
Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Boyd would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Torrens would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Diaz would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
