Gausman also leads American League pitchers. Meanwhile, Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins leads National League pitchers, Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates leads NL batters and Wander Franco of the Rays leads AL batters.

Gausman has 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, earning overall Player of the Day honors twice so far this season. Though the overall second-place player, Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen, also has 4.0 Box-Toppers points, Gausman holds the edge as overall leader because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—12.7 vs. 11.1.

Gausman’s 12.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022 was 15th among AL pitchers.

National League pitchers—Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins leads with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place Kyle Freeland of the Rockies (2.7 points).

National League batters—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates leads with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Max Muncy of the Dodgers (3.0 points).

American League batters—Wander Franco of the Rays leads with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, 10th among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place AL batter Yordan Alvarez of the Astros (2.5 points).

  • In the 192 games completed in the first two weeks of the season, batters have won Player of the Game honors in 89 games (46.4 percent) while pitchers won in 103 (53.6 percent). In the past week, batters won Player of the Game honors in 42 of the 95 games (44.2 percent) while pitchers won in 53 of the 95 (55.8 percent). While pitchers are still winning a majority of Player of the Game honors in 2023, batters are doing better than last year when they won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors. A year ago, after the first two weeks of the 2022 season, batters had won only 29.2 percent of all Player of the Game honors.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
