Rasmussen also leads American League pitchers. Meanwhile, Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks leads National League pitchers, Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates leads NL batters and Wander Franco of the Rays leads AL batters.

Rasmussen has 5.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, passing last week’s leader, Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (4.0 points), who falls to fourth overall and also fourth among AL pitchers. Rasmussen leads the overall second-place player, Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom. Though both Rasmussen and deGrom have 5.0 Box-Toppers points this season, Rasmussen ranks higher because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—11.1 vs. 9.4.

deGrom also ranks second among AL pitchers. Rasmussen ranked second overall in last week’s player rankings.

National League pitchers—Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks rises to first place with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players. He passes last week’s NL pitching leader, Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins (3.7), who falls to third among NL pitchers. Though Gallen has the same 3.7 Box-Toppers point total as two other NL pitchers (Marcus Stroman of the Cubs and Luzardo), he ranks ahead because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points (Gallen—18.7, Stroman—5.7, Luzardo—4.0).

National League batters—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates leads for the second straight week with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves (3.5 points).

American League batters—Wander Franco of the Rays leads for the second week with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, 16th among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place AL batter Anthony Rizzo of the Yankees (2.7 points).

  • Players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023—234 (there were 161 as of last week).

  • Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—28 (there were 20 as of last week).

  • Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2023 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—23 (there were 12 as of last week).

  • Games completed so far in 2023—286, an average of 19.1 per team.

  • Percentage of scheduled season completed—11.8.

  • In the 286 games completed so far this season, batters have won Player of the Game honors in 130 games (45.5 percent) while pitchers won in 156 (54.5 percent). In the past week, batters won Player of the Game honors in 41 of the 94 games (43.6 percent) while pitchers won in 53 of the 94 (56.4 percent). Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors won this season from 53.6 percent last week to 54.5 percent this week. While pitchers are still winning a majority of Player of the Game honors in 2023, batters are doing better than last year when they won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors. A year ago, after the first three weeks of the 2022 season, batters had won only 31.4 percent of all Player of the Game honors.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
