Box-Toppers almanac

  • Players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023—285 (there were 234 as of last week).

  • Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—49 (there were 28 as of last week).

  • Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2023 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—33 (there were 23 as of last week).

  • Games completed so far in 2023—383, an average of 25.5 per team.

  • Percentage of scheduled season completed—15.8.

  • Pitchers had a dominating week, winning more than two-thirds of all Player of the Game honors (67.0 percent), after winning between 51 and 57 percent each of the first three weeks of the season. While that diminished the gains batters have apparently made thanks to rules changes this season, batters have still won a larger share of Player of the Game honors compared to this time in the 2022 season. In the 383 games completed so far this season, batters have won Player of the Game honors in 162 games (42.3 percent) while pitchers won in 221 (57.8 percent). (A year ago, after the first four weeks of the 2022 season, batters had won only 33.9 percent of all Player of the Game honors.) In the past week, batters won Player of the Game honors in 32 of the 97 games (33.0 percent) while pitchers won in 65 of the 97 (67.0 percent). Pitchers increased their share of Player of the Game honors won this season from 54.5 percent last week to 57.8 percent this week. Through the entire 2022 season, batters won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
