Braves pitcher Michael Tonkin is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Tonkin struck out six over 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and earning the save, in the 8-3 win over the Rockies.
Tonkin earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 139th among all players, 49th among National League pitchers and eighth among NL closers.
American League Player of the Day
Orioles pitcher Tyler Wells struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, five hits and one walk, in the 4-2 win over the Blue Jays.
Wells earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, 36th among all players and 19th among AL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
David Fry of the Guardians hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 8-6 win over the Padres.
This is Fry’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Fry made his Major League debut May 1 and was playing in his 14th career game.
National League Batter of the Day
Chris Taylor of the Dodgers hit a grand slam and went 1-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 5-4, 11-inning win over the White Sox.
Debut
Mickey Moniak of the Angels also made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Moniak (HR 3-4 R 2BI in the 5-3 win over the Rangers) made his Major League debut Sept. 16, 2020, and was playing in his 87th career game.
