Ohtani also leads American League pitchers and batters. Also this week, Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins rises to lead National League pitchers in Box-Toppers points and Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals maintains his lead among NL batters for the second week.

Ohtani

NEW: Inbox notification of each post!

Ohtani has 17.4 Box-Toppers points to maintain his lead among all players, earning 3.5 points in the past week (in fact, earning all 3.5 on a record-setting doubleheader Thursday). He leads over second-place player, Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo (13.1 points). Ohtani also leads over second-place AL pitcher Chris Bassitt of the Blue Jays (12.4), who is third overall.

Ohtani also leads AL batters for the 10th straight week, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5 points).

Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 14 times in 2023—seven as a designated hitter and seven as a starting pitcher. He’s earned 8.7 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 8.7 as a starting pitcher. He is the only player to qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories.

In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher. This year, he will almost certainly finish the season ranked among both batters and pitchers.

Ohtani’s 8.7 points as a batter is second-most among all batters, behind of Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals with 9.0. Ohtani’s 8.7 points as a pitcher by themselves would rank eighth among AL pitchers.

National League pitchers

Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo rises to lead the category with 13.1 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Braves pitcher Spencer Strider, who falls to second with 12.7 points.

Luzardo ranks second overall.

National league batters

Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals leads for the second week with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 in the past week. He leads over second-place James Outman of the Dodgers (6.7).

He ranks 16th among all players.

Box-Toppers almanac

  • Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—277 (there were 264 as of last week).

  • Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2023 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—125 (there were 119 as of last week).

  • Games completed so far in 2023—1,542, an average of 102.8 per team.

  • Percentage of scheduled season completed—63.5.

  • For the first time this season, batters won the week’s majority of Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors over pitchers, though just barely. Batters won in 45 of the 89 games played (50.6 percent), compared to 44 for pitchers. Batters marginally improved their share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 40.3 percent last week to 40.9 percent this week (631 of 1,542 games played). Batters are doing slightly better than they were at the same point last year. Through 1,584 games last season, batters had won Player of the Game honors in 622 games, 39.3 percent of all games. Through the entire 2022 season, batters won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
