Chris Owings of the Dodgers is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s first spring training game of 2024.

Owings doubled and went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 14-1 win over the Padres.

Owings would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game—1.0 for being Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point for being overall Player of the Day. (There was only one game played Thursday.) However, because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Owings won Player of the Game honors on a tiebreaker—fellow Dodgers player Jose Ramos also had a +2.0 Box-Toppers game scores with an identical line score (2B 1-2 R 2BI). In cases of game score ties between players on the same team, a player who starts the game holds the tiebreaker over the player who comes off the bench. Ramos entered the game in the fifth inning.

Five Dodgers pitchers also had +2.0 Box-Toppers game scores Thursday, but in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers, giving Owings the edge. Here are the Dodgers pitchers with +2.0 game scores Thursday:

Owings earned no Box-Toppers points in 2023, playing 10 Major League games with the Pirates. He last earned Box-Toppers points April 1, 2021, with the Rockies, winning National League Player of the Day honors. Those 1.7 points he earned that day were his only points of the season and were his first since 2016, when he earned 3.0 points with the Diamondbacks. Owings has 8.2 career Box-Toppers points earned from 2014-21.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Owings would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
