Braves pitcher Spencer Strider is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Monday’s spring training games.
Strider, who led all players with 21.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023, is the first player to earn Player of the Game honors for the third time this spring training season. He also recorded the highest Box-Toppers game score (+11.0) of any Player of the Game winner this spring.
Strider struck out nine over five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 3-0 win over the Twins.
Strider would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Strider previously earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors twice this spring:
On Feb. 29: 3IP 2H 0R BB 5K W in the 5-0 win over the Twins.
On March 5: 4IP 4H 0R BB 4K ND in the 3-0 win over the Tigers.
In the 19 days of spring training so far, Strider’s +11.0 Box-Toppers game score Monday is the highest among all Player of the Game winners. Game scores for pitchers have the possibility of increasing as they pitch more innings as spring progresses. Strider’s five innings pitched is tied for the most for pitchers who earned Player of the Game this spring with Sunday’s overall Player of the Day, Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers.
American League Player of the Day
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil struck out eight over 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk in the 2-1 win over the Phillies.
Gil would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Gil earned no Box-Toppers points in 2023 as he recovered from 2022 Tommy John surgery. He has 1.0 career Box-Toppers point, earned in 2021 with the Yankees.
National League Batter of the Day
Jose Azocar of the Padres hit a three-run homer, tripled and went 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 13-3 win over the Mariners.
Azocar would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Azocar earned no Box-Toppers points in 2023, playing in 55 games for the Padres. He has 2.0 career Box-Toppers points, earned in 2022 with the Padres, when he played in 98 games.
American League Batter of the Day
Zack Gelof of the Athletics homered and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.
Gelof would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Gelof earned 2.5 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 93rd among AL batters.
Monday’s games
In Monday’s 14 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were nine Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.
In five of Monday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Strider would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gil would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Azocar and Gelof would have each earned 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
