Willy Adames of the Brewers is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.
Also Sunday, Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola earned his third Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2024 spring training season.
Player of the Day
Adames hit three two-run homers and went 3-for-3, scoring four times and driving in six runs, in the 14-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Adames would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Adames earned 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 16th among NL batters. This was also his second Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2024 spring training season. He also did it March 19 (HR 1-3 R 3BI in the 8-5 win over the Guardians).
Adames had a Box-Toppers game score of +10.0, best of all Sunday Player of the Game winners and second-highest among all batters to win Player of the Game honors this spring. Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees had a +11.0 game score to lead all Player of the Game winners on March 20.
American League Player of the Day
Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman struck out five over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits an two walks, in the 1-0 win over the Pirates.
Stroman would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Stroman earned 7.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Mets, 28th among NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
Adley Rutschman of the Orioles hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 8-3 win over the Twins.
Rutschman would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Rutschman earned 5.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 30th among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Willy Adames.
Notable
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola earned his third Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2024 spring training season Sunday.
Nola (5.2IP 2H 0R BB 4K W in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays) previously earned overall Player of the Day Feb. 25 (2IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K W in the 4-0 win over the Yankees) and Player of the Game honors March 13 (4.2IP 2H R 2BB 5K ND in the 4-1 win over the Tigers).
Nola also has the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Sunday’s Player of the Game winners. His 12.0 Box-Toppers points was 12th among NL pitchers.
Sunday’s games
In Sunday’s 13 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were nine Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.
In two of Sunday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Two games ended in a tie (Braves vs. Red Sox and Cubs vs. Mariners) and so no Player of the Game honors were awarded in those.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Adames would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Stroman would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Rutschman would have earned 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
