About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Yankees pitcher Luis Gil increases his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, topping the list for the third straight week.

Meanwhile, all category leaders remain unchanged from last week: Gil leads American League pitchers, Chris Sale of the Braves leads National League pitchers, Juan Soto of the Yankees leads AL batters and Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters.

Gil leads

Gil has 13.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up 1.7 points in the past week. He increases his lead over second-place player, Braves pitcher Chris Sale (9.7). He leads second-place AL pitcher Tanner Houck of the Red Sox (9.7), who is third overall.

National League pitchers

Chris Sale of the Braves leads NL pitchers for the second week with 9.7 points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL pitcher, Ranger Suarez of the Phillies (9.4).

Sale ranks second overall.

American League batters

Juan Soto of the Yankees leads the category for the seventh straight week with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week. He leads over second-place Aaron Judge of the Yankees, with 6.5 points.

Soto ranks 16th among all players.

National League batters

Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters for the second week with 5.2 points, picking up no points over the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter Francisco Lindor of the Mets (4.9).

Doyle ranks 34th overall.

Box-Toppers almanac

While pitchers still won most of this week’s Player of the Game honors, batters had one of their better weeks. Pitchers earned Player of the Game honors in 52 of the 92 games this week (56.5 percent) while batters won in 40 games (43.5 percent). For the season, pitchers’ share of Player of the Game honors won fell from 68.1 percent last week to 67.0 percent this week (628 times in 938 total games). Batters have won 310 times in 938 games (33.0 percent).

Batters have won 378.1 of the total 1,118.7 Box-Toppers points awarded this season. Their share of points increased from last week (32.8 percent) to this week (33.8 percent).

The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009 and is on track to plummet to a record-shattering low in 2024.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
