About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil leads Box-Toppers season player rankings at the All-Star break, the eighth straight week he’s been atop the list.
Meanwhile, Dylan Cease of the Padres rises to lead National League pitchers in player rankings. All other player rankings leaders remain the same: Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads American League batters and Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters. Gil also continues his lead among AL pitchers.
Gil leads
Gil has 14.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up 1.0 point since the last player rankings report July 4. Though Gil leads his eighth straight player rankings report, he did lose the overall lead July 7, when he was passed by Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal. But Gil was Player of the Game on July 13, regaining the lead.
Gil now leads over second-place player Skubal (13.4) both overall and among AL pitchers.
National League pitchers
Dylan Cease of the Padres rises to lead NL pitchers this week with 12.4 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Chris Sale of the Braves, who falls to second place. Though Cease and Sale both have 12.4 points for the season, Cease ranks higher because he has more 2023 points—10.0 vs. 8.7.
Cease ranks third among all players.
National League batters
Brenton Doyle of the Rockies leads NL batters for the second week with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place Bryce Harper of the Phillies (7.7).
Doyle also this week rises to first place among all batters in 2024 Box-Toppers points, passing Aaron Judge of the Yankees (8.5). He ranks 22nd among all players.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters for the fifth straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place Juan Soto of the Yankees (8.5 points).
Though Judge and Soto both have 8.5 points for the season, Judge ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—12.0 vs. 9.0.
Judge ranks 23rd among all players.
Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers won the majority of Player of the Game honors since July 4, as they have done every week this season, but batters still increased their overall share of Player of the Game honors and Box-Toppers points for the season.
Pitchers won Player of the Game honors in 78 of the 140 games since July 4 (55.7 percent) compared to 62 for batters (44.3 percent). Still, batters increased their overall share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 36.0 percent as of the last player rankings report July 4 to 36.7 percent as of July 14 (532 times in 1,449 games played). Pitchers have won 917 times (63.3 percent).
Batters also made overall gains in share of Box-Toppers points won this season, winning 37.0 percent of all points (637.5 out of 1,725.1), while pitchers have won 63.0 percent (1,087.6 points). Batters increased their overall share from 36.3 percent last week.
The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) Batters still trail the record-low set in 2022, but have made gains in recent weeks, gaining 4.2 percent from 32.8 percent six weeks ago to 37.0 percent this week.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
