Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes is Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Saturday, Braves pitcher Chris Sale rises to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors. In addition, Willy Adames of the Brewers rises to lead National League batters in 2024 Box-Toppers points after earning NL Batter of the Day honors.

Player of the Day

Burnes struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 4-2 win over the Tigers.

Burnes earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.7 for the season, 35th among all players and 18th among American League pitchers.

Burnes becomes the 46th player this season to reach 10 Box-Toppers points. It is his fourth and fourth straight season with 10 or more points. His best season was 2021 with the Brewers when he had 18.1 points, fifth overall and fourth among NL pitchers. In 2023, he had 11.7 points with the Brewers, 13th among NL pitchers.

National League Player of the Day is Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove.

National League Player of the Day

Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 8-0 win over the Giants.

Musgrove earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 8.7 for the season, 30th among NL pitchers.

Musgrove recorded a +11.0 Box-Toppers game score Saturday, the same as Burnes. But Burnes won overall Player of the Day over Musgrove because he had more innings pitched in his game—seven vs. six.

National League Batter of the Day is Willy Adames of the Brewers.

National League Batter of the Day

Willy Adames of the Brewers hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in five runs, in the 15-8 win over the Diamondbacks.

Adames earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 10.5 for the season, 38th overall and rising to first place among NL batters, passing previous leader Brenton Doyle of the Rockies (9.7), who held the lead since July 1.

Adames also becomes the 47th player—and just the second batter—to reach 10 Box-Toppers points this season. This is Adames’ first season with 10 or more points. His previous best season was 2023 with the Brewers, when he had 6.7 points, 16th among NL batters.

The only other batter with more than 10 points in 2024 is Aaron Judge of the Yankees, whose 12.0 points leads AL batters. The fewest batters to reach 10 points in a season is four in 2022. However, there are six batters with between 8.5 and 9.7 points who could pass 10 points by winning one Player of the Game or Batter of the Day honor.

Though Adames now leads NL batters with 10.5 points, his current point total is still lower than the record-low total for a player to lead any category in a season. (Nolan Arenado of the Rockies led NL batters in 2016 with 10.7 points.) But there are still two weeks left in the season.

American League Batter of the Day is Rafael Devers of the Red Sox.

American League Batter of the Day

Rafael Devers of the Red Sox went 1-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 7-1 win over the Yankees.

Devers earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 15th among AL batters.

Braves pitcher Chris Sale rises to third place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
