What are those numbers after players' names?
About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
➜ Players are listed by the position they predominantly played when they earned Box-Toppers points (by earning Player of the Game honors).
➜ Players are listed with the team on which they finished the season. Some players played on two or more teams in a single season.
➜ DIPPERS: Players whose Box-Toppers point total declined most from one season to the next, ranked by biggest point decline.
➜ RISERS: Players whose Box-Toppers point total increased most from one season to the next, ranked by biggest point increase.
➜ Note: If players have the same Box-Toppers point total, ties are broken based on which player had more Box-Toppers points in the previous season (or the previous season before that—and so on, if those point totals are tied).
The chart accompanying this post shows points leaders for the season by several different categories and classifications, including:
Overall top 10 leaders and top 10 American League and National League pitchers and batters.
Top batters by position in each league—top 10 for outfielders, top five for all other positions.
The top 10 biggest dippers and risers—the "dippers" are players whose Box-Toppers point total declined most from 2023; the "risers" are players whose point total climbed the most from 2023.
Top relief pitchers, including the top five AL and NL closing (CP) and middle relief (MR) pitchers.
Highlights include:
Top overall player for 2024
Phillies Pitcher Zack Wheeler is Box-Toppers 2024 Player of the Year, leading all players with 21.4 Box-Toppers points for the season. He also led National League pitchers.
Wheeler had four separate stints atop Box-Toppers player rankings in 2024. He took the lead for one day on May 6 with 6.7 Box-Toppers points until he was passed May 7 by Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga with 7.7. He took the lead again for one day on May 17 with 7.7 points until he was passed by Imanaga (8.7) on May 18. Wheeler took the lead for a third time on Aug. 31 with 18.4 points holding the lead for four days until Imanaga again passed him with 18.7 points on Sept. 4. Wheeler took the season points lead for good on Sept. 6 with 19.4 points, finishing the season with 2.0 more points, giving him 21.4. (Imanaga finished the season with 20.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and third among NL pitchers.)
It is the first time Wheeler has won Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors in his 12th season. In his previous best season, 2021, he earned 21.1 Box-Toppers points with the Phillies, third overall and second among NL pitchers. In 2023, he earned 14.7 points with the Phillies, fifth among NL pitchers. He has earned 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points in a season five times:
2018 with the Mets (10.7), 24th among NL pitchers.
2021 with the Phillies (21.1), third overall and second among NL pitchers.
2022 with the Phillies (14.4), 11th among NL pitchers.
2023 with the Phillies (14.7), fifth among NL pitchers.
2024 with the Phillies (21.4), first overall.
Wheeler has 105.0 career Box-Toppers points, which was eighth among active NL pitchers at the end of 2024.
Top AL pitcher for 2024
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal led AL pitchers in 2024 with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, second overall.
Top AL batter for 2023
Aaron Judge of the Yankees led AL batters in 2024 with 13.0 Box-Toppers points, 21st overall.
Top NL batter for 2024
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers led NL batters with 11.0 Box-Toppers points, 41st overall.
Top batters by position
The chart shows the top AL and NL batters by position, including the top five first basemen, second basemen, shortstops, third basemen, catchers and designated hitters in both the AL and NL. Also shown are the top 10 outfielders in each league.
Dippers
These are the players whose Box-Toppers point total declined most from 2022 to 2023. Braves pitcher Spencer Strider had the biggest decline of 20.1 points. He led all players in 2023 with 21.1 Box-Toppers points but earned just 1.0 point in 2024. His 20.1-point decline is the fifth-largest decline from one regular-length season to the next since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Strider, 26, made two starts in 2024 before going on the injured list with a torn elbow ligament that kept him out for the remainder of the season. He underwent an internal brace surgery in April and is expected to pitch again in 2025.
Risers
These are the players whose Box-Toppers point total increased most from 2023 to 2024. Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga had the biggest increase in 2024, earning 20.7 Box-Toppers points in his first season. Among non-rookies, Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes had the biggest gain in points of 15.4, the third-biggest overall rise, earning 15.4 in 2024 after arning 2.0 in 2023.
Relief pitchers
The chart shows the top five closing and relief pitchers in both the AL and NL for 2024. Josh Hader of the Astros led AL closing pitchers with 11.0 Box-Toppers points. Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals led NL closers with 12.0 points. Tyler Alexander of the Rays led AL middle relievers with 5.7 points. And Nick Martinez of the Reds led NL middle relievers with 9.7 points.
Box-Toppers has tracked each game played since the start of the 1995 season. A season-by-season look at Box-Toppers’ detail leaders for all 30 seasons—a sprawling, scrolling chart—can be found at this link. Like the chart here, it shows the top groups of players at different positions and by different categories or classifications, but this chart shows every season from 1995 to 2024. For example, who was the top AL first baseman in 1996? Who was the top NL closing pitcher in 1999? Whose Box-Toppers point total rose the most from 2004 to 2005? And who was the top NL second baseman in 2008? It’s all there.
(Answers, by the way are: Mo Vaughn of the Red Sox with 18.6 points, Billy Wagner of the Astros with 15.0 points, Dontrelle Willis of the Marlins, who rose 12.7 points from 2004 to 2005 and Chase Utley of the Phillies with 12.0 points.)
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
