Red Sox pitcher Sean Newcomb is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s spring training games.

Other Player of the Game winners Thursday include Jacob Stallings of the Rockies and Paul Goldschmidt of the Yankees.

Player of the Day

Newcomb struck out five over three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 3-2 win over the Mets.

Newcomb had a Box-Toppers game score of +6.0, best among all Red Sox players and highest among all Thursday Player of the Game winners.

Newcomb earned 0.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, playing in seven games with the Athletics. He was on the injured list early in the season, recovering from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He was released by the Athletics July 5. He has 20.1 career Box-Toppers points, earned from 2017 to 2022.

National League Player of the Day

Jacob Stallings of the Rockies hit two home runs, including a three-run homer, in the 6-4 win over the Guardians. Stallings went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs.

Stallings earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024.

American League Batter of the Day is Paul Goldschmidt of the Yankees.

American League Batter of the Day

Paul Goldschmidt of the Yankees homered, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 8-6 win over the Tigers.

This is the third time during the 2025 spring training season that Goldschmidt has won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. He also did it Feb. 21 in the 4-0 win over the Rays (2B 1-2 0R BI) and March 10 in the 10-2 win over the Tigers HR 2-2 2R BI).

Goldschmidt becomes the second player with three Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors this spring, joining Gavin Sheets of the Padres, who did it Feb. 21, March 8 and March 11.

Goldschmidt earned just 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2024 with the Cardinals, but has 88.0 career points earned from 2011 to 2024, most among current active AL batters, ahead of second-place Mike Trout of the Angels (84.2).

National League Batter of the Day

There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Thursday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Jacob Stallings.

Thursday’s games

There were 13 completed spring training games between two Major League teams Thursday. (Spring games featuring club prospects were also played but are excluded here.) In the 13 games, there were eight Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In four of Thursday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

One game ended in a tie (Cardinals vs. Astros). No Player of the Game honors are awarded in tie games. One game Thursday was cancelled due to weather (Diamondbacks vs. Mariners).

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day:

  • Newcomb would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Stallings would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.

  • Goldschmidt would have earned 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
