Spencer Jones of the Yankees is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

Other Player of the Game winners Tuesday include Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga and Brenton Doyle of the Rockies.

Player of the Day

Jones hit a three-run homer, doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 12-3 win over the Phillies.

Jones had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0, best among all Yankees players and highest among all Tuesday Player of the Game winners.

Jones, drafted 25th overall by the Yankees in the 2022 amateur draft, has played 266 games in three minor league seasons but has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

If this were a regular season game, Jones would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point as overall Player of the Day). However, no Box-Toppers points are awarded because it’s a preseason exhibition game.

National League Player of the Day is Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga.

National League Player of the Day

Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga struck out three over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 16-1 win over the Padres.

Imanaga had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0, best among all Cubs players and highest among all Tuesday NL Player of the Game winners. He had the same Box-Toppers game score as Spencer Jones, but Jones won overall Player of the Day over Imanaga because in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers. Imanaga also had the same game score as another NL pitcher who won Player of the Game honors Tuesday, Roki Sasaki of the Cubs (3IP 2H 0R BB 5K ND in the 4-2 win over the Reds). But Imanaga beat Sasaki for NL Player of the Day honors because he earned the win in his game, while Sasaki picked up a no decision.

Imanaga earned 20.7 Box-Toppers points in his 2024 rookie season with the Cubs, fourth overall, third among NL pitchers and first among all rookies. (He finished fourth in 2024 NL Rookie of the Year voting.) Imanaga also has the most 2024 Box-Toppers points among all of Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners.

If this were a regular season game, Imanaga would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.7 bonus points as AL Player of the Day).

National League Batter of the Day is Brenton Doyle of the Rockies.

National League Batter of the Day

Brenton Doyle of the Rockies homered and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 9-5 win over the Reds.

Doyle had a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0, best among all Rockies players and highest among all NL batters who won Player of the Game honors Tuesday. (He is the only one.)

Doyle earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024, fifth among NL batters.

If this were a regular season game, Doyle would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.5 bonus points as NL Batter of the Day).

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Spencer Jones.

Tuesday’s games

In Tuesday’s 12 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were five Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In five of Tuesday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Two games ended in a tie (Twins vs. Braves and Giants vs. Padres). No Player of the Game honors are awarded in tie games.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Jones would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, Imanaga would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day and Doyle would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
