About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert leads Box-Toppers first weekly player rankings report of the 2025 season.

Gilbert also leads American League pitchers. Meanwhile, Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters, Jackson Chourio leads National League batters and Zack Wheeler of the Phillies leads NL pitchers.

Gilbert leads

Gilbert has 3.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, first overall, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who ranks second overall with 3.0 points. Gilbert ranks ahead of second-place AL pitcher Tyler Mahle of the Rangers (2.7).

Gilbert earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points as Player of the Day on March 27 and 1.7 points as AL Player of the Day on April 7.

Gilbert earned 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 20th overall and 11th among AL pitchers.

American League batters

Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, second overall. He ranks ahead of second-place AL batter Tyler O'Neill of the Orioles (3.0). Judge led AL batters in 2024 with 13.0 points, 21st among all players.

National League batters

Jackson Chourio of the Brewers leads with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, third overall. He ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Pete Alonso of the Mets (3.0). Though they both have 3.0 points in 2025, Chourio ranks higher because he has more 2024 points—5.7 vs. 5.0.

National League pitchers

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler leads with 2.7 Box-Toppers points, sixth overall. He ranks ahead of second-place NL pitcher Jesús Luzardo of the Phillies. Though they both have 2.7 points in 2025, Wheeler ranks ahead because he has more 2024 points—21.4 vs. 2.0.

Wheeler led all players in 2024 with 21.4 points.

Box-Toppers almanac

In 2024, batters set a new record for the lowest share of Box-Toppers points earned in a season in 2024 with 37.2 percent, breaking the previous record low of 38.1 percent in 2022.

Batters are starting 2025 just above that record-low mark, winning 40 percent of all Box-Toppers points so far this season (91.5 of 228.5). Pitchers have won 60 percent (137.0 of 228.5).

Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in 114 of the 190 games played in 2025 (60 percent) while batters have won in 76 games (40 percent). This past week (April 4 to 10), pitchers won in 52 of the 90 games played (57.8 percent) while batters won in 38 games (42.2 percent).

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
