Also, two players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earn Player of the Game honors Friday: Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to third place and Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray rises to seventh place.

Player of the Day

Soroka struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 2-0 win over the Rangers.

Soroka earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 230th among all players, 74th among National League pitchers.

This was Soroka’s first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor since Sept. 13, 2019, when he was with the Braves, a season in which he earned 11.4 Box-Toppers points, 16th among NL pitchers.

Soroka played in three games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, including serving as the Braves’ opening-day starter in July. He suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon on Aug. 3, 2020, missing the rest of that season. While rehabbing, he re-tore the tendon June 24, 2021. He missed the entire 2021 and 2022 seasons.

He returned to pitch May 29, 2023, in his 38th career game. He appeared in seven games in 2023 and 25 games in 2024 with the White Sox and was in his seventh game of 2025 on Friday. Soroka did not earn Player of the Game honors in the 38 games since returning to pitch in 2023. But Friday, in his 76th career game, Soroka won both Player of the Game honors and overall Player of the Day honors.

American League Player of the Day

Anthony Volpe of the Yankees hit a two-run homer and drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, in the 9-6 win over the Red Sox. Volpe went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs.

Volpe earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, 23rd among AL batters.

National League Batter of the Day

Wilmer Flores of the Giants (2-4 2R BI in the 5-4, 10-inning win over the Braves) earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points, giving him 5.0 for the season, fifth among NL batters.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Anthony Volpe.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
