Darvish, W. Rodriguez top players for Friday, April 19

Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish is Friday's Player of the Day. Darvish pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 10 in the 7-0 win over the Mariners.

Pirates pitcher Wandy Rodriguez is National League Player of the Day. Rodriguez gave up only one hit over seven innings in the 6-0 win over the Braves.

Darvish and Rodriguez had identical 11.0 Box-Toppers games scores. But that tie was broken in Darvish's favor because he had more strikeouts.

Peter Bourjos of the Angels is American League Batter of the Day. Bourjos went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the 8-1 win over the Tigers.

Ryan Braun of the Brewers is NL Batter of the Day. Braun hit a three-run home run in the 5-4 win over the Cubs.

Note: Mets pitcher Matt Harvey takes over the lead in Box-Toppers player points for the season so far. Harvey threw seven innings and struck out seven and was Player of the Game in the 7-1 win over the Nationals. With the additional 1.0 Box-Toppers point, Harvey now has 5.0 for the season, passing Braves pitcher Paul Maholm (4.7).

Darvish receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Rodriguez receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Bourjos receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day. Braun receives 1.5 points for NL  Batter of the Day.

Top players: Velander, Kershaw atop 2012-13 lists

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander is the top-ranked player in Box-Toppers points since the start of the 2012 season.

Verlander has 26.8 Box-Toppers points in that span, 24.8 in 2012 and 2.0 so far in 2013.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw leads among all National League players with 23.8 points (20.8 in 2012 and 3.0 in 2013).

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers leads among American League batters with 15.9 points (11.7 in 2012 and 4.2 in 2013). Cabrera's strong performance so far this season has moved him to the top spot from third place on this list at the start of the season, passing both Adrian Beltre of the Rangers and Chris Davis of the Orioles.

Ryan Braun of the Brewers is NL's top batter with 12.5 points, all scored in 2012.

The player with the most points so far in 2013 is Paul Maholm of the Braves with 4.7 points. He has moved up to eighth place among NL pitchers for 2012-13, with 15.4 points.

The combined two season totals for players gives a better, more accurate picture of where they stand, especially early into the new season.

Dickey, Corbin top players for Thursday, April 18

Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey is Thursday's Player of the Day. Dickey threw six innings, struck out seven and gave up two hits, no runs and one walk in the 3-1 win over the White Sox.

Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin is National League Player of the Day. Corbin pitched seven innings and struck out seven in the 6-2 win over the Yankees. While Corbin left the game with a 2-1 lead, New York tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, leaving Corbin ineligible for the win. But Arizona came back to win the game with four runs in the top of the 12th inning.

Todd Frazier of the Reds is NL Batter of the Day. Frazier went 2-for-3 and homered in the 11-1 win over the Marlins.

Matt Wieters of the Orioles is AL Batter of the Day. Wieters hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning in the 10-6 win over the Rays.

Dickey receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Corbin receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Frazier receives 1.5 points for NL Batter of the Day. Wieters receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day.

Bailey, though pitching Tuesday, is top player for Wednesday, April 17

Reds pitcher Homer Bailey is Wednesday's Player of the Day, even though he did not pitch on Wednesday and even though he did not pick up an official win in the 1-0 win over the Phillies.

On Tuesday, Bailey pitched eight innings, struck out 10 and gave up two hits, no runs and no walks in the game that was suspended at 0-0 in the ninth inning. Since the game was tied when Bailey left the mound, he was not eligible for the win. And since Box-Toppers stats are counted for the day the game concludes, Bailey (though he pitched Tuesday) is Wednesday's top player. The game took nine minutes to finish Wednesday, with Jay Bruce's RBI single.

Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer is American League Player of the Day. Scherzer struck out 12 over eight innings in the 2-1 win over the Mariners. Scherzer, like Bailey, was named Player of the Game even though he did pick not up an official win or save. When he left, the game was tied 1-1. The Tigers scored in the top of the 14th inning to win.

James Loney of the Rays is AL Batter of the Day. Loney went 3-for-3 in the 6-2 win over Baltimore.

Kurt Suzuki of the Nationals is NL Batter of the Day. Suzuki went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a homer in the 6-1 win over the Marlins.

Bailey receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Scherzer receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Loney receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day. Suzuki receives 1.5 points for NL Batter of the Day.

Holland, Marquis top players for Tuesday, April 16

Rangers pitcher Derek Holland, who threw seven shutout innings in the 4-2 win over the Cubs, is Tuesday's Player of the Day.

Padres pitcher Jason Marquis, who gave up one run over 7 2/3 innings in the 9-2 win over the Dodgers, is National League Player of the Day.

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and 4 RBIs in the 6-2 win over the Mariners, is AL Batter of the Day.

Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, who went 3-for-4 in the 9-8 win over the Mets in 10 innings in the second game of a doubleheader, is NL Batter of the Day.

One game, the Phillies at the Reds was suspended in a 0-0 tie in the ninth inning because of heavy rain. It is set to resume Wednesday. Currently, Reds pitcher Homer Bailey has the highest Box-Toppers score of any player in the game—he pitched eight innings, gave up two hits, no runs, no walks and struck out 10. That would give him a Box-Toppers score of 16 and would likely make him Player of Game—if the Reds win. If the game is indeed concluded Wednesday, whoever is named Player of the Game will be included in Wednesday's Box-Toppers results. And if the Reds win, it seems likely Bailey, with his high Box-Toppers score, may be Wednesday's Player of the Day, even though he did all his pitching on Tuesday.

Holland receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Marquis receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Cabrera receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day. Gonzalez receives 1.5 points for NL Batter of the Day.

Ryan Dempster tops players for Monday, April 15

Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster is Monday's Player of the Day. Dempster pitched seven innings, struck out 10 and gave up only one run, two hits and two walks in the 3-2 win over the Rays. However, despite Dempster's efforts, he did not pick up the win in the game. When he left the game, the Red Sox led 2-1, but when the Rays tied the game in the top of the ninth, Dempster was no longer eligible for the win. The Red Sox scored to win in the bottom of the ninth, giving the win to closer Andrew Bailey, who also blew the save in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals is National League Player of the Day. Zimmerman went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in the 10-3 win over the Marlins.

Joe Mauer of the Twins is American League Batter of the Day. Mauer went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs in the 8-2 win over the Angels.

Note: Pitcher Eric Stults of the Padres was Player of the Game in the 6-3 win over the Dodgers, but for batting, not for pitching. Stults got highest Box-Toppers score among Padres by hitting a three-run homer.

Dempster receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Zimmerman receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Mauer receives 1.5 points for AL Batter of the Day.

Buchholz, Maholm top players for Sunday, April 14

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz, who was just six outs away from a no-hitter, is Sunday's Player of the Game. Buchholz gave up two hits, walked four and struck out 11 over eight innings in the 5-0 win over the Rays. Buchholz lost the no-hit bid with the Rays' Kelly Johnson's leadoff single in the eighth inning.

Braves pitcher Paul Maholm is National League Player of the Day. Maholm struck out seven over 7 2/3 innings and gave up no runs, four hits and one walk in the 9-0 win over the Nationals. It was the Braves' ninth straight win. Maholm, who earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for the day, becomes the season leader in points so far with 4.7.

Michael McKenry of the Pirates was National League Batter of the Day. McKenry homered twice and drove in three runs in the 10-7 win over the Reds.

No AL batter was named Player of the Game, so no bonus points were awarded Sunday for AL Batter of the Day.

Buchholz receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Day. Maholm receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. McKenry receives 1.5 points for NL Batter of the Day.
