Wainwright, with shutout, tops players for Saturday, April 13

Greinke injury is a major blow to Dodgers' chances

Zack Greinke won't be carrying the Dodgers on his shoulders—or his clavicles—anytime soon.

On Friday, the team said the right-handed star pitcher will need surgery and is out for perhaps two months after breaking his left collarbone in a benches-clearing brawl Thursday. The fracas started after Greinke hit the Padres' Carlos Quentin with a pitch. Quentin was suspended for eight games.

Greinke was a marquee off-season acquisition of the Dodgers (six years, $147 million) and was a major factor in many picking the Dodgers to win the World Series (including Box-Toppers).

Greinke led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2009 with 21.5, the year he also won the American League Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals. He remains among the top-ranked players in Box-Toppers points. Since 2008, he has the 5th most points among NL pitchers (73.4), which is the 10th most among all players. Since the start of 2012, he ranks 10th among NL pitchers. And his overall 91.8 career Box-Toppers points puts him at 10th place among active NL pitchers.

He already had 2.0 Box-Toppers points for 2013 after being named Player of the Day on April 5.

Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller is Friday's Player of the Day. The rookie gave up only one hit and struck out eight over seven innings in the 2-0 win over the Brewers.

Indians pitcher Justin Masterson is American League Player of the Day. Masterson threw a complete-game 1-0 shutout against the White Sox, striking out seven and giving up only one walk and five hits. Masterson now leads all players in Box-Toppers points for the 2013 season with 4.7.

Daniel Murphy of the Mets was National League Batter of the Day. Murphy went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs in the 16-5 win over the Twins.

Top 10: Kershaw among best players for 2013

Five players are tied at the top the 2013 Box-Toppers leaders list less than two weeks into the season.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who led National League players in Box-Toppers points in 2012, is one of the five with 3.0 Box-Toppers points.

The others are Braves pitcher Paul Maholm, Indians pitcher Justin Masterson, Athletics first baseman Brandon Moss and Mets pitcher Matt Harvey.

All five players have been named Player of the Game in two of their teams' wins. In one of the wins, each player was also named Player of the Day, earning 2.0 Box-Toppers points for the game.

Kershaw, Maholm and Harvey lead all NL pitchers.

Masterson leads all American League pitchers.

Moss leads all AL batters.

Two players are tied at the top of the NL batters list: Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter and Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer both have 2.5 Box-Toppers points.

Obviously, the season is very young, teams have only played about 10 games and most players on the list have only been named Player of the Game once, so the statistics are a little threadbare. As the season progresses, those statistics will fill in, giving a better picture of the best players. We'll have another report on 2013's top players in a couple of weeks.

What are those numbers after players' names?
