Verlander, deGrom win 2019 Cy Young Awards over Box-Toppers leaders Cole, Strasburg

Gerrit Cole of the Astros, who led all players in 2019 Box-Toppers points and had the fourth-highest single-season point total in Box-Toppers’ 25-year tracking history, fell short of winning baseball’s top pitching prize Wednesday.

Teammate Justin Verlander, who ranked second overall in Box-Toppers points, edged Cole to win the 2019 American League Cy Young Award. Cole finished second in voting. In the National League, Jacob deGrom of the Mets won the Cy Young Award for the second straight year. He finished second among NL pitchers in Box-Toppers points behind leader Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals.

Blue Jays' Edwin Encarnacion (2 3-run homers) tops player for Friday, June 20

Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays is Friday’s Player of the Day. Encarnacion hit two three-run homers in the 14-9 win over the Reds.

Braves pitcher Mike Minor is National League Player of the Day. Minor struck out 11 over seven innings in the 13-inning, 6-4 win over the Nationals. Minor did not pick up the win because the Nationals tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, after he left the game.

Seth Smith of the Padres is NL Batter of the Day. Smith homered twice and went 3-for-3 in the 6-5 win over the Dodgers.

Encarnacion receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Minor receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Smith receives 1.5 for being NL Batter of the Day.

All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Rays' David Price (CG 1R 12K) tops players for Tuesday, May 13

Rays pitcher David Price is Tuesday’s Player of the Day. Price pitched a complete game, giving up one run and striking out 12, in the 2-1 win over the Mariners.

Price earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 points for the season and is in 16th place in Box-Toppers player rankings for 2014.

Braves pitcher Mike Minor is National League Player of the Day. Minor pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out six in the 5-0 win over the Giants.

Curtis Granderson of the Mets is National League Batter of the Day. Granderson hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-3 in the 12-7 win over the Yankees.

Chris Parmelee of the Twins is AL Batter of the Day. Parmelee hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the 8-6 win over the Red Sox. Parmelee went 3-for-4 in the game.

Notable: Greg Garcia of the Cardinals earned Player of the Game honors with an extra-inning, walk-off, pinch-hit hit-by-pitch in his only plate appearance. The Cardinals beat the Cubs 4-3 in 12 innings. Garcia was hit on a 1-2 pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run, giving him a Box-Toppers game score of +1.0, enough to be the top player on the winning team.
