Kershaw leads Box-Toppers 2013 All-Star teams, Nationals have most team members

Box-Toppers all-stars graphic.png

The Box-Toppers All-Star teams for the 2013 regular season are led by overall top player, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

The Washington Nationals have the most representatives of any team, with four players.

The All-Star teams are comprised of the players with the highest Box-Toppers point totals by position in each league. In addition to the batters—eight in the National League and nine (including the designated hitter) in the American League—are the top four starting pitchers in each league, the top player who was predominately a middle-reliever and the top closing pitcher.

Kershaw was Box-Toppers Player of the Season, the top overall player, with 21.7 Box-Toppers points. The top four overall players were starting pitchers from the NL. Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer is the top AL player with 18.1 points, ranked fifth overall.

The top AL batter is Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera with 16.9 points, ranked eighth overall. The top NL batter is Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt with 13.7 points, ranked 22nd overall.

Four Nationals players made the list, more than any other team:

  • Shortstop Ian Desmond with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, ranked 163rd overall.
  • Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman with 9.2 points, ranked 66th.
  • Catcher Wilson Ramos, 7.5 points, ranked 101st.
  • Outfielder Bryce Harper, the third-ranked outfielder, with 9.4 points, ranked 65th overall.

Only two members of both leagues' All-Star teams are still active this season, playing in the World Series:

  • AL designated hitter David Ortiz of the Red Sox has 12.4 Box-Toppers points, ranked 36th overall.
  • NL starting pitcher Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals has 20.2 Box-Toppers points, ranked second overall.

Box-Toppers is set up to determine the players who most help their team win the most games. Top players from the winning team of each game are determined by a formula using standard box score statistics. These top players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being Player of the Game. Among each day's top players, bonus points are awarded for the top players and batters of the day in each league. Players accumulate points through the season to provide a data point for comparison, such as determining which players are most worthy as All-Stars.

End-of-season 2013 Box-Toppers All-Star teams

Here are the Box-Toppers All-Stars by position for both leagues. It includes players with the highest Box-Toppers points (BTP) by position in each league. Also included is the players' overall rank among all players.

Cards' Michael Wacha, one out from no-hitter, tops players for Tuesday, Sept. 24

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha, who was one out from pitching a no-hitter, is Tuesday's Player of the Day.

Wacha gave up his one and only hit with two outs in the ninth inning against the Nationals when Ryan Zimmerman reached on an infield single. Wacha pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings and struck out nine in the 2-0 win.

Mariners pitcher James Paxton is American League Player of the Day. Paxton pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 10 in the 4-0 win over the Royals.

Michael Brantley of the Indians is AL Batter of the Day. Brantley homered and went 3-for-4 in the 5-4 win over the White Sox.

Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates is National League Batter of the Day. Alvarez drove in three runs and went 2-for-5 in the 8-2 win over the Cubs.

Notables: Braves closing pitcher Craig Kimbrel rises to 29th place in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday. Kimbrel (1IP 3K W in 3-2 win vs. Brewers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.7 for the season.

Blue Jays pitcher Dustin McGowan scored his first Box-Toppers point in more than five years Tuesday. McGowan, the former starter now pitching middle relief was Player of the Game in the 3-2 win over the Orioles. It is the first time he has earned Box-Toppers points since he last earned Player of the Game honors on June 10, 2008, when he started for the Blue Jays. McGowan earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points as a starter for the Blue Jays in 2007 and 3.7 in 2008.

Coming Wednesday: Two pitchers among the top 10 in Box-Toppers player rankings (see the list on the home page) are scheduled to start Wednesday:

  • Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer starts against the Twins. Scherzer has 17.1 Box-Toppers points, is in sixth place overall and leads all AL players.
  • Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano starts against the Cubs. Liriano has 16.7 Box-Toppers points and is in ninth place overall.

Neither Scherzer nor Liriano is in position to take the outright lead in Box-Toppers points (held by Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw with 20.7) since the most they could earn is 2.0 Box-Toppers points. This is the final scheduled regular season start for both pitchers.

Wacha receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Paxton receives 1.7 for AL Player of the Day. Brantley and Alvarez each receive 1.5 for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

All of Tuesday's other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

Rays' Archer tops players for Friday, Sept. 13, Cards' Wainwright rises to 4th in Box-Toppers player rankings

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

Rays pitcher Chris Archer is Friday's Player of the Day, while Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright rises to fourth place in Box-Toppers player rankings.

Archer pitched six shutout innings and struck out seven in the 3-0 win over the Twins. Archer rises to 41st in Box-Toppers player rankings. He earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.7 for the season.

Wainwright rises from sixth to fourth place in Box-Toppers player rankings for the season after earning Player of the Game honors Friday (see the updated top 10 list on the home page).  Wainwright (8IP 1R 6K ND in 2-1, 10-inning win vs. Mariners) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.7 for the season.

Wainwright is among five National League pitchers holding down the top five overall spots in Box-Toppers player rankings, all of whom are only 1.6 points apart. With only two weeks left in the season, that makes the race for top NL pitcher—and top overall Box-Toppers points leader—a virtual toss-up. The current overall leader is Marlins rookie pitcher Jose Fernandez with 19.0 Box-Toppers points. (Fernandez is not scheduled pitch again this season.) Any one of the four pitchers trailing Fernandez could claim the top overall spot after their next start.

Brewers pitcher Kyle Lohse is American League Player of the Day. Lohse pitched a complete game, giving up only one run, in the 5-1 win over the Reds.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia of the Red Sox is AL Batter of the Day. Saltalamacchia hit a grand slam and went 2-for-3 in the 8-4 win over the Yankees.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals is NL Batter of the Day. Zimmerman homered and went 3-for-5 in the 6-1 win over the Phillies.

Archer receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Lohse receives 1.7 for AL Player of the Day. Saltalamacchia and Zimmerman each receive 1.5 for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

All of Friday's other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

All-Star rosters include most Box-Toppers points leaders, only a few minor snubs

With the 2013 All-Star Game here, it's time for a Box-Toppers examination of the choices for the game by fans and the managers.

Overall, not bad. The players with the highest Box-Toppers points totals in each league were almost always named to the American League and National League teams.

For example, Box-Toppers points leader and Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin was named to the NL roster (though Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was named the game's starter). And AL points leader and Indians pitcher Justin Masterson was named to the AL roster (though Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer was named AL starter).

The player with the most Box-Toppers points this season who was not selected as an All-Star is Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller, who has 11.4 Box-Toppers points, the fifth highest among NL pitchers and more than NL starter Harvey (11.0).

Other notable snubs (a full list is in the chart below) include:

  • Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez, the AL player with the most Box-Toppers points (8.0) left off the roster.
  • Yunel Escobar of the Rays, who has more Box-Toppers points than any other AL shortstop (4.5).
  • J.P. Arencibia of the Blue Jays, who has more points than any other AL catcher (5.5).
  • Athletics outfielders Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Reddick, who are among the top three AL outfielders in Box-Toppers points. Both have 4.5.
  • Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals, who has more points than any other NL third basemen (6.7).

The elected starters for the AL are generally stronger than the starters for the NL in terms of Box-Toppers points and player rankings (see the charts at right). Five players are among the top one or two players in Box-Toppers points at their position among AL starters, while only three players in the NL can say the same.

The chart shows the players Box-Toppers points for the season, BTP, and their rank according to their field position in their league. Generally speaking, the the lower the rank by position number, the better. For example, Chris Davis, Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz and Carlos Gonzalez all rank No. 1 among players in their respective positions. However, elected NL starter Carlos Beltran of the Cardinals, ranks only 39th among NL outfielders in Box-Toppers points for the season.

While the NL starting line-up is not as strong as the AL line-up, the NL reserves include most of the players leading in Box-Toppers points at their position. For example, in the reserves and pitchers chart at the right below the elected starters, you can see that four NL players leading in Box-Toppers points in their position were selected to the team by NL manager Bruce Bochy of the Giants. They include:

  • Brian McCann of the Braves, leading among NL catchers with 7.0 Box-Toppers points.
  • Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks, leading among NL first basemen with 9.7 Box-Toppers points.
  • Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals, leading among NL second basemen with 6.0 Box-Toppers points.
  • Everth Cabrera of the Padres, leading among NL shortstops with 4.5 Box-Toppers points.

Often, players are chosen to the All-Star for sentimental and nostalgic reasons. That might seem to be the case for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who has only 1.0 Box-Toppers point this season and ranks 137th among AL pitchers in points. And though he's having a strong year (30 saves in 32 chances and a 1.83 ERA), he hasn't picked up a lot of Box-Toppers points since he hasn't been the player who most contributed to the win in most of the games in which he's appeared. Still, Rivera has a very strong career Box-Toppers total. He has 122.4 career Box-Toppers points, 26th among all players since 1995 and second among closing pitchers only to Trevor Hoffman (129.4).  Even if he weren't having a great year statistically, his career Box-Toppers numbers would cry out for his selection to the All-Star Game in this, the year he is retiring.

BTP: Box-Toppers points for the current season.

RANK BY POS.: A players ranking among players in the same position for the current season.

D-Backs' Patrick Corbin, Indians' Michael Brantley top players for Sunday, July 7

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin, Sunday's Player of the Day, rises to third place among players in Box-Toppers points for the season.

Corbin struck out 10 over eight innings in the 6-1 win over the Rockies. He earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 13.4 for the season, moving him from fifth to third place for the season.  Corbin now leads all National League pitchers in Box-Toppers points, passing Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (who also was a Player of the Game Sunday.)

Michael Brantley of the Indians is American League Player of the Day. Brantley hit two home runs, drove in five runs and went 3-for-4 in the 9-6 win over the Tigers.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals is NL Batter of the Day. Zimmerman hit a grand slam in the 11-7 win over the Padres.

Standings update: Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (8IP 1R in 4-1 win vs. Giants) earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being Player of the Game, giving him 12.7 for the season. However, Kershaw remains in fourth place in Box-Toppers points and actually falls to second place among NL pitchers, after he was passed by Box-Toppers Player of the Day Patrick Corbin of the Diamondbacks.

Notable: Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn is the 14th player this season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. Lynn was a Player of the Game (7IP 7K in 3-2 win vs. Marlins) and earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.4 for the season.

Corbin receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Brantley receives 1.7 for AL Player of the Day. Zimmerman receives 1.5 for being NL Batter of the Day.

All of Sunday's other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point:

Athletics' Jesse Chavez, Cardinals' Adam Wainwright top players for Thursday, June 13

Box-Toppers Daily Scorecard graphic.png

Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez is Thursday's Player of the Day. Chavez pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings of closing, extra-innings relief in the 3-2, 18-inning win over the Yankees. Chavez gave up only one hit and struck out seven after appearing in the 13th inning.

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright is National League Player of the Day. Wainwright pitched seven shutout innings in the 2-1 win over the Mets.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals is NL Batter of the Day. Zimmerman homered and drove in three runs in the 5-4 win over the Rockies.

Chavez receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Wainwright receives 1.7 for NL Player of the Day. Zimmerman  receives 1.5 for being NL Batter of the Day. No American League batter was Player of the Game Thursday, so no AL batter receives bonus points.

Ryan Dempster tops players for Monday, April 15

Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster is Monday's Player of the Day. Dempster pitched seven innings, struck out 10 and gave up only one run, two hits and two walks in the 3-2 win over the Rays. However, despite Dempster's efforts, he did not pick up the win in the game. When he left the game, the Red Sox led 2-1, but when the Rays tied the game in the top of the ninth, Dempster was no longer eligible for the win. The Red Sox scored to win in the bottom of the ninth, giving the win to closer Andrew Bailey, who also blew the save in the top of the ninth.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals is National League Player of the Day. Zimmerman went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in the 10-3 win over the Marlins.
