Orioles pitcher Kyle Gibson is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

Gibson struck out seven over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 8-0 win over the Pirates.

Gibson would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Gibson earned 9.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022 with the Phillies, 32nd among National League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Braves pitcher Max Fried struck out five over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 5-0 win over the Twins.

Fried would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Fried earned 16.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, eighth among NL pitchers.

This is the third time Fried has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in 2023 spring training. He also did it Feb. 27 and March 4.

National League Batter of the Day—Elehuris Montero of the Rockies homered and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 7-0, six-inning win over the Royals.

Montero earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

Shea Langeliers of the Athletics is Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day in Sunday’s spring training games.

American League Batter of the Day—Shea Langeliers of the Athletics homered and went 1-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 6-3 win over the Dodgers.

Langeliers earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2022.

This is the second time Langeliers has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in 2023 spring training. He also did it Feb. 26.

White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Sunday’s win over the Mariners.

Notable—White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among the 17 who earned Player of the Game honors in Sunday’s spring training games.

Cease (4IP 3H R BB 6K W in the 6-2 win over the Mariners) earned 20.4 Box-Toppers points in 2022, fifth overall and third among AL pitchers.

Box-Toppers tracks spring training games between two Major League teams and does not track World Baseball Classic games or other games that involve non-Major League teams. In Sunday’s 17 spring training games (see chart below for game details), 11 who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining six players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Gibson would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Fried would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Montero and Langeliers would have each earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
