deGrom also rises to lead American League pitchers. Meanwhile, Red Sox teammates Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida both rise to tie for the lead among AL batters, Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks maintains his lead among National League pitchers and Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates maintains his lead among NL batters.
deGrom has 7.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, passing last week’s leader Gallen, who falls to third overall with 6.7 points. deGrom also passes last week’s AL pitching leader Gerrit Cole of the Yankees, who falls to third among AL pitchers with 6.0 points. deGrom leads over second-place AL pitcher, Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays (7.0 points).
deGrom rose to lead players after earning AL Player of the Day honors on Friday, April 28, despite leaving that start early with forearm tightness and being placed on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his throwing elbow. He’s expected to be out at least two more weeks. deGrom has been riddled with injuries the past few seasons and while they’ve limited his starts, he has shone when healthy enough to pitch. In 2021, he earned 16.7 Box-Toppers points, ninth overall and seventh among NL pitchers, despite missing most of the second half of the season. In 2022, he earned 9.4 Box-Toppers points, 28th among NL pitchers, making just 11 starts in the final two months of the season.
American League batters—Red Sox teammates Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida rise to tie for the lead in the category, each with 3.5 Box-Toppers points. Usually ties are broken using previous season’s Box-Toppers point totals, but both players earned their first Box-Toppers points in 2023.
They pass last week’s leader Wander Franco of the Rays (3.0), who falls to fifth. Duran and Yoshida rank tied for 24th among all players.
National League pitchers—Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks leads the category for the third straight week with 6.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He falls from first to third overall. He leads over second-place NL pitcher Kyle Freeland of the Rockies (4.7 points).
National League batters—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates leads for the fourth straight week with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week, 20th among all players. He ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves (3.5 points).

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
