Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Friday, Randy Arozarena of the Rays rises to first place among American League batters in 2023 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Kelly struck out 10 over seven innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 3-1 win over the Nationals.
Kelly earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 81st among all players, 28th among National League pitchers.
American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Bailey Ober struck out six over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 2-0 win over the Guardians.
Ober earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 35th among AL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Ryan Noda of the Athletics hit two doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 12-8 win over the Royals.
Noda earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, rising to seventh among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day—Wilmer Flores of the Giants homered and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in one run, in the 6-4 win over the Brewers.
Rankings—Randy Arozarena of the Rays rises to first place among AL batters after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Arozarena (HR 1-2 R BI in the 5-4 win over the Yankees) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 3.5 for the season, passing previous leaders Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida, Red Sox teammates who were tied for the lead with 3.5 points. Though Arozarena has the same point total as both of them, he ranks higher because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points (6.0). Neither Duran nor Yoshida earned points in previous seasons.
Arozarena ranks 25th among all players.
Notable—Cubs pitcher Justin Steele has the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

Padres pitcher Yu Darvish (6.2IP 4H 2R ER BB 6K W in the 5-2 win over the Dodgers) earned 1.0 point, giving him 125.0 career points, rising to 47th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He passes Gary Sheffield (124.1) on the “all-time” list and now trails 46th-ranked player, Red Sox pitcher Corey Kluber (125.1). Darvish ranks 13th among active players in career points, seventh among active NL pitchers. He has 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2023.
Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (6IP 7H 3H BB 10K W in the 5-3 win over the Phillies) now has 148.6 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 27th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Friday, he passes Javier Vazquez (148.3) on the “all-time” list and now trails 26th-ranked player Chipper Jones (149.0).
