Rankings
Marlins pitcher Braxton Garrett rises from eighth to fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday.
Garrett (7IP 3H 2R ER 0BB 13K ND in the 6-4 win over the Pirates) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.7 for the season. He ranks second among NL pitchers, behind Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks (9.7). Though Gallen and Garrett both have 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, Gallen ranks ahead because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—18.7 vs. 5.7.
Garrett had a +14.0 Box-Toppers game score Thursday, same as Padres pitcher Blake Snell, who was Player of the Game in the win over the Giants. But Snell beat Garrett out for NL Player of the Day honors because he earned the win in his game while Garrett picked up a no-decision, because the Marlins trailed when he exited.
Debut
Royals pitcher Austin Cox made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Cox (3.2IP 2H 0R BB 4K ND in the 6-5 win over the Rays) made his Major League debut May 4 and was playing in his sixth career game.
Scoring
Ryan earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Snell earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.
All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Thursday is only the 2nd time batters were shut out of winning Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors this season. The other time was April 13, when 7 games were played and, like Thursday, Joe Ryan @Twins was Player of the Day.https://t.co/VkJBFbT31f
