Ohtani also leads American League pitchers and batters. Also this week, Spencer Strider of the Braves rises to lead National League pitchers in Box-Toppers rankings. Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves leads NL batters for the second week.

Ohtani

Ohtani has 13.9 Box-Toppers points to maintain his lead among all players, earning no points since the last player rankings report June 30. He leads over Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0), who is second among all players and among AL pitchers. Ohtani also leads AL batters for the eighth straight week, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5 points).

Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 12 times in 2023—six as a designated hitter and six as a starting pitcher. He’s earned 7.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 6.7 as a starting pitcher. He is the only player to qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories.

In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

By themselves, Ohtani’s 7.2 points as a batter would rank third among AL batters and his 6.7 points as a pitcher would rank 19th among AL pitchers.

National League pitchers

Braves pitcher Spencer Strider rises to lead the category this week, passing Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers, who falls to fourth with 10.1 points. Strider leads over second-place NL pitcher Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins (11.1).

Strider ranks third overall.

National League batters

Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves leads for the second straight week with 6.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter Willy Adames of the Brewers (5.7 points).

Acuna ranks 48th overall.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
