Tampa Bay Rays lead narrows as they top Box-Toppers team rankings for 14th week

The Tampa Bay Rays lead in Box-Toppers team rankings for the 14th straight week but their lead is narrowing.

Here are Box-Toppers 2023 team rankings through games of Sunday, July 9. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from July 1 to July 9 . The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on June 30.

The Atlanta Braves lead National League teams for the second week and are closing in on the Rays. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are the week’s hottest team.

Rays lead all teams

Rays players have accumulated 72.7 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 3.0 points since the last team rankings report June 30. They lead over the second-place Braves (68.4) by 4.3 points. They lead over the second-place American League team, the Texas Rangers (68.1) by 4.6 points.

In all 13 previous team rankings reports this season, the Rays have had baseball’s best winning percentage. But this week, they fall to second in winning percentage (.624) behind the Braves (.674).

The Rays are led by pitcher Shane McClanahan (9.7 Box-Toppers points, eighth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers). Rays’ top batter is Isaac Paredes (6.2 points, fourth among AL batters). There are 22 different Rays players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Braves lead National League teams

The Braves lead NL teams for the second week, rising from third to second place overall with 68.4 points, picking up 7.5 in the past week. The Braves rank ahead of the Marlins (65.2 points, fifth overall) among NL teams.

The Braves rise this week to have baseball’s best winning percentage (.674), moving ahead of the Rays (.624), who have dominated in winning percentage all season.

The Braves are led by pitcher Spencer Strider (11.7 points), third overall and first among NL pitchers. Top batter is Ronald Acuna Jr. (6.0 points), first among NL batters. There are 21 different Braves players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Hottest team: Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are the week’s hottest team, picking up 9.5 Box-Toppers points in the past week, most of any team. They also have the biggest jump of any team, rising from 19th to 12th place overall with 55.9 points. The Red Sox had the biggest decline in rankings from June 23 to 29.

Biggest decline: Angels

The Los Angeles Angels had the biggest decline among all teams in the past week, falling nine spots from ninth to 18th place with 54.1 points, picking up 1.7 points in the past week.

Last place: Royals

The Kansas City Royals fall from 29th to 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings with 25.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. The Oakland Athletics, in last place last week, rise to 29th with 27.5 points, picking up 4.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
