The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, meeting in the World Series beginning Friday, also met during the regular season for three games in New York, with the Dodgers winning two of the three games:
On June 7, the Dodgers beat the Yankees, 2-1, in 11 innings.
On June 8, the Dodgers beat the Yankees, 11-3.
On June 9, the Yankees beat the Dodgers, 6-4.
Here is a look at Box-Toppers Player of the Game winners in each of those games:
June 7—Dodgers 2, Yankees 1 (F/11)
Player of the Game—Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dodgers
Yamamoto struck out seven batters over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Yamamoto did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Yamamoto was Player of the Game (earning 1.0 Box-Toppers points) and also National League Player of the Day (earning 0.7 bonus points) for a total of 1.7.
Yamamoto had a +10.0 Box-Toppers game score in that game Friday, the same as overall Player of the Day, Astros pitcher Framber Valdez (CG 4H R BB 8K W in the 7-1 win over the Angels). But Valdez won overall Player of the Day over Yamamoto because he earned the win in his game while Yamamoto picked up a no-decision.
With the 1.7 points, Yamamoto had 6.4 for the season, which at the time was 25th among all players and 12th among NL pitchers. And though it was less than halfway through the season, this was the final Player of the Game honor for Yamamoto in 2024. With his 6.4 points, he ended the season 121st overall and 48th among NL pitchers.
Yamamoto went on the injured list June 16, first diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain and later revised to right triceps soreness. He returned Sept. 10, making four regular season starts (of no more than five innings) and has made three postseason apperances (of no more than five innings), including winning Player of the Game honors Oct. 11 in the NL Division Series Game 5 win over the Padres.
June 8—Dodgers 11, Yankees 3
Player of the Game—Teoscar Hernandez, Dodgers
Hernandez hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in six runs.
Hernandez earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game, giving him 3.5 for the season. He finished the season with 5.0 Box-Toppers points, 182nd overall, 31st among NL batters and eighth among NL outfielders.
Hernandez just missed out on winning NL Player of the Day honors, which went to Ezequiel Tovar of the Rockies (2HR 4-4 2R 4BI in the 6-5 win over the Cardinals). Both Tovar and Hernandez had +6.0 Box-Toppers game scores, but Tovar ranked ahead to win NL Player of the Day because he had more hits—four vs. two.
June 9—Yankees 6, Dodgers 4
Player of the Game—Aaron Judge, Yankees
Judge homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs.
Judge earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game, giving him 7.5 for the season, rising to first place among American League batters, passing teammate Juan Soto, who had 7.0 points at the time. Judge finished the season with 13.0 Box-Toppers points, most among AL batters and 21st among all players. Soto finished with 11.0 points, second among AL batters and 41st among all players.
Judge had a +3.0 Box-Toppers game score, behind the +5.0 game score earned that day by Adley Rutschman of the Orioles, who was AL Batter of the Day (GS 3-5 R 6BI in the 9-2 win over the Rays).
Judge has won Player of the Game honors once during the 2024 postseason, on Oct. 15 in the AL Championship Series Game 2 win over the Guardians.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
