Orioles pitcher Grayson Rodriguez is Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Rodriguez struck out nine over six innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 13-4 win over the Angels.
Rodriguez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 2.0 for the season, third among all players. He’s one of six players with 2.0 points in 2024. The two players ranking ahead of him have more 2023 Box-Toppers points: Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes (11.7) and Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller (8.7). Rodriguez had 8.0 points in 2023.
Rodriguez’s 8.0 points in 2023 was 40th among American League pitchers.
Rodriguez had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0 Saturday, same as another Player of the Game, Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert (7IP 4H R BB 8K ND in the 4-3, 10-inning win over the Red Sox). But Rodriguez beat Gilbert for overall Player of the Day because Rodriguez earned the win in his game, while Gilbert picked up a no-decision.
Gilbert has the most 2023 Box-Toppers points of all of Saturday’s Player of the Game winners. His 13.4 points was ninth among AL pitchers.
National League Player of the Day
Giants pitcher Jordan Hicks struck out six over five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 9-6 win over the Padres.
Hicks earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 1.7 for the season, ninth among all players.
National League Batter of the Day
Rhys Hoskins of the Brewers homered and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 7-6 win over the Mets.
This is Hoskins’ first Player of the Game honor since Sept. 11, 2022, with the Phillies. He missed the 2023 with a knee injury (ACL tear). He had 6.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 12th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day
Mark Canha of the Tigers homered, doubled and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 7-6, 10-inning win over the White Sox.
Notable
Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn now has 119.5 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Lynn (4IP 4H 0R BB 5K ND in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Dodgers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, rising to 49th among all players since 1995 when Box-Toppers tracking began, passing Cliff Lee (119.1 points). Lynn now trails 48th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). Lynn ranks eighth among active, signed players and fourth among active NL pitchers. He has 1.0 Box-Toppers point for 2024.
Debut
Pirates pitcher Jared Jones made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Jones (5.2IP 3H 3R 2BB 10K W in the 9-3 win over the Marlins) was also making his Major League debut.
Scoring
Rodriguez earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Hicks earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.
Hoskins and Canha each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.
All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
