Yankees pitcher Luis Gil is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, regaining the lead in season player rankings.
Also Wednesday, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day
Gil struck out nine over eight innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks, in the 2-1 win over the Angels.
Gil earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.7 for the season, rising from second to first place overall, passing previous leader, Braves pitcher Chris Sale (9.7 points), who falls to second place. Gil extends his lead among American League pitchers, ahead of second-place Joe Ryan of the Twins (7.7 points).
Gil becomes the first player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2024. It is his first season with 10 or more points. His previous high was 1.0 point in 2021 with the Yankees, his only previous point before 2024.
Gil previously led Box-Toppers season player rankings for three days, beginning May 23 and ending May 26, when Sale passed him.
National League Player of the Day
Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 6-1 win over the Giants.
Sanchez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.4 for the season, 30th among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day
Willy Adames of the Brewers homered and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 10-6 win over the Cubs.
American League Batter of the Day
Nelson Velazquez of the Royals hit two home runs and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 6-1 win over the Twins.
Velazquez earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, eighth among AL batters.
Rankings
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal rises to ninth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Skubal (7IP 3H 0R BB 8K W in the 8-0 win over the Pirates) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.4 for the season. He ranks fourth among AL pitchers.
Skubal had a +11.0 Box-Toppers game score Wednesday, same as Gil, but Gil edged Skubal for overall Player of the Day because he had more innings pitched—eight vs. Seven. As a result, Gil earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points Wednesday, while Skubal earned just 1.0.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
