Top 100 breakdown by position
Pitchers comprise the overwhelming majority of top 100 players and in fact, are far more dominant on this year’s All-Star break top 100 list than they have been in recent seasons.
There are 87 pitchers (79 starters and eight closers) in the top 100 list and only 13 batters. Since 2015, the most pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break has been 77—in 2019 and 2021. Batters are winning a record-breaking low share of Box-Toppers points in 2024 compared to pitchers, currently winning 37 percent of all points earned. The record low for a season for batters is 38.1 percent, set in 2022.
Here is the position-by-position breakdown of players (if a player played more than one position, then their primary position—the one at which they most often earned Player of the Game honors—is generally used):
79—Starting pitcher
8—Closing pitcher
5—Outfield
3—First base
2—Designated hitter
1—Third base
1—Second base
1—Shortstop
0—Catcher
There are no catchers among the top 100 players for 2024. The highest-ranking catcher is Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, whose 4.2 points ranks 112th.
Most top 100 players are pitchers
There are 87 total pitchers among the top 100 players (79 starters and eight closers). To demonstrate what a record-shattering year this is for pitchers, here is a look at the number of pitchers among the midseason top 100 in recent seasons:
In 2015, there were 74 pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break (67 starters and seven closers).
In 2016, there were 65 pitchers (64 starters and one closer).
In 2017, there were 60 pitchers (55 starters, four closers and one middle reliever).
In 2018, there were 72 pitchers (64 starters, six closers and two middle relievers).
In 2019, there were 77 pitchers (70 starters and seven closers).
In 2020, there was no All-Star Game (pandemic), so no actual All-Star break.
In 2021, there were 77 pitchers (74 starters and three closers).
In 2022, there were 72 pitchers (68 starters, three closers and one middle reliever).
In 2023, there were 68 pitchers (64 starters, three closers and one middle reliever).
Newcomers among top 100 players
There are nine players on the top 100 list who have made their Box-Toppers debut in 2024, each having earned Player of the Game honors for the first time in their career this season. All of them are starting pitchers:
6. Shota Imanaga of the Cubs, 11.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth among NL pitchers.
33. Paul Skenes of the Pirates, 8.0 points, 15th among NL pitchers.
38. Ronel Blanco of the Astros, 7.7 points, 18th among AL pitchers.
57. Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers, 6.4 points, 24th among NL pitchers.
65. Jared Jones of the Pirates, 6.0 points, 27th among NL pitchers.
94. Ben Brown of the Cubs, 5.0 points, 41st among NL pitchers.
94. Alec Marsh of the Royals, 5.0 points, 42nd among AL pitchers.
94. Tobias Myers of the Brewers, 5.0 points, 41st among NL pitchers.
100. Reed Garrett of the Mets, 4.7 points, 44th among NL pitchers.
Ties in Box-Toppers player rankings are generally broken by giving the tie-breaking edge to players with the higher previous season Box-Toppers point total. But since these players have no previous season totals, players with the same point totals remain tied, including three in 94th place (Brown, Marsh and Myers).
The highest-ranking batter who made his Box-Toppers debut in 2024 is Jordan Westburg of the Orioles, whose 4.5 points is 108th among all players.
These players making their Box-Toppers debut this season are among the 105 total who have earned their first career Player of the Game honor so far in 2024.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
