Gaps between top pitcher and top batter
The team with the biggest gap between top pitcher and top batter is the Detroit Tigers. Tarik Skubal leads pitchers with 13.4 points, second overall, while Colt Keith leads Tigers batters with 4.0, 142nd overall, a difference of 9.4 points.
The team with the smallest gap between top pitcher and top batter is the Oakland Athletics. JP Sears leads pitchers with 5.0 points, 84th overall and Brent Rooker leads batters, also with 5.0 points, 89th overall. Though they have the same 2024 point total, Sears ranks higher because he has more 2023 points (4.0 vs. 2.0).
After the Tigers, here are the next four largest point gaps between a team’s top pitcher and top batter:
San Diego Padres—Top pitcher Dylan Cease (12.4 points, third overall) leads top batter Manny Machado (4.5 points, 104th overall) by 7.9 points.
Atlanta Braves—Top pitcher Chris Sale (12.4 points, fourth overall) leads top batter Marcell Ozuna (4.5 points, 102nd overall) by 7.9 points.
Boston Red Sox—Top pitcher Tanner Houck (11.4 points, seventh overall) leads top batter Rafael Devers (3.5 points, 159th overall) by 7.9 points.
Chicago White Sox—Top pitcher Garrett Crochet (9.7 points, 14th overall) leads top batter Nick Senzel (2.0 points, 307th overall) by 7.7 points. (Senzel was signed as a free agent over the All-Star break. He earned his points playing for the Nationals earlier this year. The White Sox previous top batter, Martin Maldonado, 2.5 points, 263rd overall, was designated for assignment over the All-Star break.)
Batters lead three teams
On three teams, the batter leads the team in Box-Toppers points:
On the Colorado Rockies, outfielder Brenton Doyle has 8.7 points, 22nd overall, while top pitcher Cal Quantrill has 5.0 points, 88th overall.
On the San Francisco Giants, third baseman Matt Chapman has 6.5 points, 54th overall, while top pitcher Logan Webb has 5.0 points, 76th overall.
On the Miami Marlins, outfielder Jesus Sanchez has 4.5 points, 103rd overall, while top pitcher Ryan Weathers has 4.0 points, 141st overall.
Lowest totals to lead teams
The lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead a team is 4.5 by outfielder Jesus Sanchez of the Marlins. He ranks ahead of the team’s top pitcher, Ryan Weathers, with 4.0 points. Weathers also has the lowest point total to lead any team’s pitchers.
The lowest point total to lead any team’s batters is 2.0 by Nick Senzel of the White Sox and Marcus Semien of the Rangers. Senzel ranks 307th overall while Semien ranks 278th.
Highest totals to lead teams
Luis Gil has the highest point total to lead a team. His 14.4 points leads all Yankees and ranks first overall. Brenton Doyle has the highest point total to lead a team’s batters. His 8.7 points leads all Rockies batters, is 22nd overall and first among all batters.
Other facts
Three of the four main category leaders also lead their team in 2024 Box-Toppers points:
Overall leader and AL pitching leader Luis Gil leads the Yankees with 14.4 points
NL pitching leader Dylan Cease leads the Padres with 12.4 points.
NL batting leader Brenton Doyle leads the Rockies with 8.7 points.
While AL batting category leader Aaron Judge leads Yankees batters with 8.5 points, he ranks second among all Yankees behind Gil (14.4).
The player with the highest Box-Toppers point total who is not among his team’s leaders is Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert, whose 10.0 Box-Toppers points ranks 11th overall but second among Mariners players, behind pitcher George Kirby (10.7 points, ninth overall).
The batter with the highest Box-Toppers point total who is not among his team’s leaders is Juan Soto of the Yankees, whose 8.5 points is second among all Yankees batters and all AL batters, behind Judge. Though Judge and Soto both have 8.5 points for the season, Judge ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—12.0 vs. 9.0.
While pitchers dominate today, batters once had parity
Pitchers in recent years have increasingly won larger shares of Box-Toppers points compared to batters. While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009. (Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.)
Weekly player and team rankings reports
Fridays are usually the day Box-Toppers posts weekly player and team rankings reports, but the All-Star break altered our schedule.
Box-Toppers’ most recent player and team rankings reports were posted earlier this week, after Sunday’s final regular season games before the All-Star break. Since no games have been played since then, those reports are up-to-date until games resume Friday. (Here is a Box-Toppers look at Friday’s pitching matchups). Box-Toppers weekly player and team rankings will resume usual Friday postings next week, July 26.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
