Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to second place in season player rankings and securing 2024 American League Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors.
Top 10 players
Here are the top 10 players in 2024 Box-Toppers points (BTP) through Tuesday, Sept. 24:Player | Pos | Team | BTP | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Zack Wheeler | pi sp | Phillies | 21.4 |
2 | Tarik Skubal | pi sp | Tigers | 21.1 |
3 | Dylan Cease | pi sp | Padres | 21.1 |
4 | Shota Imanaga | pi sp | Cubs | 20.7 |
5 | Chris Sale | pi sp | Braves | 19.1 |
6 | Luis Gil | pi sp | Yankees | 17.4 |
7 | Blake Snell | pi sp | Giants | 15.7 |
8 | Bryce Miller | pi sp | Mariners | 15.7 |
9 | Framber Valdez | pi sp | Astros | 15.4 |
10 | Sean Manaea | pi sp | Mets | 15.4 |
Skubal struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Rays.
Skubal earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 21.1 for the season, rising from fourth to second place among all players, behind only Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (21.4). (Though he has the same 21.1-point total as Padres pitcher Dylan Cease, Skubal ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—10.7 vs. 10.0.)
Skubal increases his 2024 Box-Toppers points lead among AL pitchers ahead of second-place Luis Gil of the Yankees (17.4 points). With less than a week to go in the season and with Gil only scheduled for one more start Saturday, the most he can earn is 2.0 points as Player of the Day, which would give him 19.4 for the season, not enough to pass Skubal. As a result, with Tuesday’s Player of the Day honor, Skubal has now secured first place and is 2024 AL Box-Toppers Player of the Year.
Skubal becomes the fourth player to reach 20 Box-Toppers points in 2024. It is his first season with 20 or more points. His previous high was 10.7 points in a season in both 2022 and 2023 with the Tigers. In 2022, he ranked 23rd among AL pitchers. In 2023, he ranked 19th among AL pitchers.
Box-Toppers Player of the Year race
Skubal likely can’t rise any higher than second place in 2024 Box-Toppers player rankings because Tuesday was his last scheduled start of the season. (Is it possible Skubal pitches on short rest Sunday, the final day of the season, if the Tigers are still in contention for a playoff berth?)
The race for overall Box-Toppers Player of the Year likely comes down to three players, who are all within 0.7 Box-Toppers points of each other:
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler, ranked first with 21.4 points, who starts Saturday, would secure Player of the Year by winning 1.7 points as NL Player of the Day or better. But he would also win Player of the Year if both of the other two contenders do not earn Player of the Game honors.
Padres pitcher Dylan Cease, ranked third with 21.1 points, who starts Wednesday against the Dodgers, could pass Wheeler by winning 1.0 point as Player of the Game. But Wheeler could subsequently pass Cease with his Saturday start.
Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga, ranked fourth with 20.7 points, could pass Wheeler when he makes his scheduled start Sunday, the final day of the season. However, Imanaga would be eliminated from contention if either Cease or Wheeler earn 1.7 points or better in their starts this week.
The race for Box-Toppers Player of the Year will not be decided until at least Saturday and could last until Imanaga’s start on Sunday.
National League Player of the Day
Braves pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach struck out four over seven innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk, in the 5-1 win over the Mets.
Schwellenbach earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, 39th among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day
Cody Bellinger of the Cubs tripled and went 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 10-4 win over the Phillies.
Bellinger earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 2.5 for the season, 84th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day
Vaughn Grissom of the Red Sox doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in one run, in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays.
This was Grissom’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Grissom made his Major League debut Aug. 10, 2022, and was playing in his 91st career game.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
