Dodgers won despite ranking outside top 10 teams in pitching Box-Toppers points
In 2024, teams with the most Box-Toppers points earned by pitchers generally ranked higher in overall Box-Toppers team rankings.
For example, the Philadephia Phillies led all teams with 124.9 Box-Toppers points. Pitchers earned 78.0 of those points, fifth-most among all teams. Box-Toppers’ seven top-ranked teams were all among the top 10 in points earned by pitchers.
However, the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers were a notable anomaly. While the team finished eighth overall in Box-Toppers points (113.7), they finished 11th in points earned by pitchers (66.2) and third in points earned by batters (47.5). Further, they ranked seventh among teams with the highest share of points earned by batters (41.8 percent).
Dodgers planned for strong pitching, didn’t get it, but won anyway
This has not been the standard model for championship teams in recent years and it surely wasn’t the intended plan for the Dodgers going into 2024. The team seemed overstocked on quality starting pitchers to begin the season—Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Bobby Miller and James Paxton, to name a few.
But injuries limited all of those frontline starters and by the postseason, the Dodgers’ only consistent, uninjured starter was Jack Flaherty, who the Dodgers picked up in a midseason trade with the Tigers. Yet, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pieced together pitching rotations with relievers serving as short-term starters in bullpen games and nursing along starters in short-inning stints as they returned from the injured list. Somehow it worked. The Dodgers had the most regular season wins (98) and won the World Series over the New York Yankees in five games, despite being overmatched on paper, especially in pitching.
With the 2024 Dodgers as notable exceptions, the best teams were generally those with the highest Box-Toppers points earned by pitchers. Teams with the 10 highest Box-Toppers point totals earned by pitchers finished among the top 12 teams in Box-Toppers’ final team rankings.
Top 5 teams in Box-Toppers points by pitchers
San Diego Padres 86.8 (third overall)
Seattle Mariners 81.5 (11th overall)
Atlanta Braves 80.4 (sixth overall)
Milwaukee Brewers 79.3 (second overall)
Philadelphia Phillies 78.0 (first overall)
1. San Diego Padres, most points among pitchers–86.8
Padres players accumulated 121.8 total Box-Toppers points in 2024, third overall and pitchers earned 86.8 (71.3 percent) led by:
Dylan Cease (21.1 points, third overall).

Yu Darvish (8.7 points, 78th overall).
Meanwhile, Padres batters earned 35.0 of the team’s points in 2024, 15th-most among all teams. That means pitchers won 71.3 percent of all the team’s points while batters won 28.7 percent. Only two teams had a higher percentage of their Box-Toppers points generated by pitchers—the Seattle Mariners (74.5 percent) and the Tampa Bay Rays (71.8 percent).
2. Seattle Mariners—81.5 points
The Mariners had the second-most points earned by pitchers, 81.5 of their 109.4 points. They ranked 11th overall and their 74.5 percent of points earned by pitchers was most among all teams. Five Mariners pitchers each had 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points in 2024:
Bryce Miller (15.7, eighth overall).
George Kirby (15.4, ninth overall).
Logan Gilbert (13.0, 20th overall).
Bryan Woo (11.7, 39th overall).
Luis Castillo (10.7, 46th overall).
Mariners batters earned only 27.9 Box-Toppers points in 2024, 22nd among all teams. The team’s share of 25.5 percent of points by batters is lowest among all teams.
Among the top five with the most Box-Toppers points earned by pitchers, the Mariners are the only one that did not make the postseason.
3. Atlanta Braves—80.4 points
The Braves had the third-most points earned by pitchers, 80.4 of their 118.9 points. They ranked fifth overall and their 67.6 percent of points earned by pitchers was ninth-most among all teams. Braves pitching leaders included:

Aaron Nola (13.4 points, 16th overall).
Cristopher Sánchez (11.4 points, 40th overall)
Ranger Suárez (10.4 points, 53rd overall).

How postseason teams fared in their points mix
Eleven of the 12 teams qualifying for the postseason were among the overall top 13 teams in Box-Toppers points in 2024. The Detroit Tigers were the anomaly in this category, finishing far behind in 22nd overall with 84.9 Box-Toppers points but qualifying as the sixth-seeded AL playoff team.
Two teams that ranked among the top 13 did not make the postseason:
Arizona Diamondbacks, finishing ninth with 113.7 Box-Toppers points.
Seattle Mariners, finishing 11th with 109.4 Box-Toppers points.
Both the Diamondbacks and Mariners had the biggest variances between their overall pitchers’ rank and their overall batters’ rank. For example, the Mariners ranked second among pitchers (81.5 points) and 22nd among batters (27.9). That variance of 20 places (22nd minus second) is the biggest among all teams. The Diamondbacks had the second biggest variance of 19 (first among batters with 53.7 and 20th among pitchers with 57.2).
While having more balance between pitching and batting rankings gives a team a better chance of success, the Cleveland Guardians made the postseason with the same variance (19 places) as the Diamondbacks (second among batters with 50.9 points and 21st among pitchers with 55.4).
Also, a complete balance in rankings is not a guarantee of success. The only team with the same ranking among pitchers and batters was the Chicago White Sox. They finished 30th and last among batters with 13.7 points and 30th and last among pitchers with 22.4 points. Their combined 36.1 points was 30th and last among all teams and they trailed the team ahead of them, the 29th-ranked Miami Marlins with 51.7 points, by 15.6 points, the largest gap behind the next-highest-ranked team in overall rankings. The White Sox also won 41 games, 30th and last among all teams. They trailed the 29th-ranked Colorado Rockies (61 wins) by 20 wins, by far the largest gap behind the next-highest-ranked team in overall wins.
Teams relying on pitching OR batting did not fare well
Still, teams that relied more heavily on pitching or batting for their total share of points generally did not fare as well.
Among the top 10 teams with the greatest share of total points earned by batters, only five made the postseason. Here is a look at those 10 teams and whether they made the postseason (yes or no):
Colorado Rockies, 59.2 percent of points earned by batters (no). (The Rockies were the only team with batters earning the majority of points.)
Oakland Athletics, 49.1 percent (no).
Arizona Diamondbacks, 48.4 percent (no).
Cleveland Guardians, 47.9 percent (yes).
Baltimore Orioles, 43.8 percent (yes).
Cincinnati Reds, 43.4 percent (no).
Los Angeles Dodgers, 41.8 percent (yes).
Los Angeles Angels, 41.2 percent (no).
New York Mets, 39.5 percent (yes).
New York Yankees, 38.6 percent (yes).
The San Diego Padres had the lowest share of points by batters among postseason teams, 28.7 percent, third-lowest overall.
Among the top 10 teams with the greatest share of total points earned by pitchers, only three made the postseason. Here is a look at those 10 teams and whether they made the postseason (yes or no):
Seattle Mariners, 74.5 percent (no).
Tampa Bay Rays, 71.8 percent (no).
San Diego Padres, 71.3 percent (yes).
St. Louis Cardinals, 70.3 percent (no).
Texas Rangers, 70.1 percent (no).
Pittsburgh Pirates, 69.5 percent (no).
Houston Astros, 69.2 percent (yes).
Toronto Blue Jays, 69.1 percent (no).
Atlanta Braves, 67.6 percent (yes).
San Francisco Giants, 67.0 percent (no).
The Cleveland Guardians had the lowest share of points by pitchers among postseason teams, 52.1 percent, fourth-lowest overall.
Team pitching rankings of postseason teams
The 12 postseason teams were spread widely in rankings among pitchers, from first place (the Padres with 86.8 Box-Toppers points earned by pitchers) to 23rd place (the Tigers with 52.2 points earned by pitchers). Nine of the 11 teams with the most points earned by pitchers made the postseason. The two teams that did not make the postseason:
Seattle Mariners, second among pitchers with 81.5 points.
St. Louis Cardinals, 10th among pitchers with 67.9 points.
Three teams which made the postseason finished outside the top 11 in pitching points:
Baltimore Orioles, 18th among pitchers with 59.8.
Cleveland Guardians, 21st among pitchers with 55.4.
Detroit Tigers, 23rd among pitchers with 52.2.
Team batter rankings of postseason teams
The 12 postseason teams were spread from second to 19th place in batter rankings. The Guardians had the highest batter ranking among postseason teams (second with 50.9 points) while the Tigers had the lowest (19th with 32.7 points).
Eight of the nine teams with the most Box-Toppers points among batters made the postseason. The only exception was the Arizona Diamondbacks, who led batters with 53.7 points. Four postseason teams finished outside the top nine in batting rankings:
Atlanta Braves, 13th among batters with 38.5 points.
San Diego Padres, 15th among batters with 35.0 points.
Houston Astros, 17th among batters with 34.0 points.
Detroit Tigers, 19th among batters with 32.7 points.
The Tigers were the only postseason team to rank outside the top 10 in Box-Toppers points by both pitchers (23rd) and batters (19th).
Analysis
Teams with an overreliance on either pitching or batting generally did not fare well. Teams with a stronger balance of points—for example, ranking among the top 10 teams in both pitching and batting—fared better. Five teams ranked in the top 10 in Box-Toppers points earned by both pitchers and batters and all five made the postseason:
Kansas City Royals, ninth in batting, eighth in pitching.
Milwaukee Brewers, eighth in batting, fourth in pitching.
New York Mets, seventh in batting, ninth in pitching.
New York Yankees, fifth in batting, seventh in pitching.
Philadelphia Phillies, fourth in batting, fifth in pitching.
However, the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, despite finishing outside the top 10 in Box-Toppers points earned by pitchers, was able to win the most games and piece together bullpen arms and recovering starters to win the World Series.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
