Miguel Amaya of the Cubs is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s spring training games.

Amaya homered and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 7-3 win over the Dodgers.

Amaya would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Amaya earned 2.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with the Cubs. He’s earned 3.7 total career points from 2023-24.

Amaya had a Box-Toppers game score of +4.0 Friday, best among all Cubs players and highest-ranking among all of Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

American League Player of the Day

Tyler Gentry of the Royals hit an eighth-inning, go-ahead, three-run homer in the 5-2 win over the Rangers. Gentry went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs.

Gentry would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Gentry has played in three regular season Major League games, all in 2024, but has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

No pitchers earned Player of the Game

No pitchers earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of the five games completed Friday. Early in spring training, most pitchers are only pitching one or two innings, making it more difficult for them to compile Box-Toppers game scores high enough to surpass batters’ scores.

Friday’s games

In Friday’s five completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were three Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.

Scoring

No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Amaya would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gentry would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
