Vinny Capra of the Brewers is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Saturday’s spring training games.

Capra hit a pair of three-run home runs in the 8-7 win over the Reds. Capra went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in six runs.

Capra would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Capra has played in 20 regular season Major League games over three seasons (2022-24), but has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Capra had a Box-Toppers game score of +7.0 Saturday, best among all Brewers players. Another Player of the Game winner Saturday, Matt Gorski of the Pirates, also had a +7.0 game score (2HR 2-3 2R 6BI in the 10-5 win over the Orioles). But Capra beat Gorski for Player of the Day honors on a low-level tie breaker: He left no runners on base in his at bats while Gorski left two on base.

American League Player of the Day

Red Sox pitcher Shane Drohan struck out three over two scoreless and hitless innings, allowing no walks, in the 6-4 win over the Rays.

Drohan would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Drohan has played four minor league seasons and has yet to make his Major League debut, so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

American League Batter of the Day

Ben Malgeri of the Tigers doubled and went 3-for-3, driving in four runs, in the 7-6 win over the Phillies.

Malgeri would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Malgeri has played four minor league seasons and has yet to make his Major League debut, so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

National League Batter of the Day

There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Saturday becaue the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Vinny Capra.

Were it a regular season day, Capra would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, Drohan would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day and Malgeri would have earned 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
