Austin Hays of the Reds is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Monday’s spring training games.
Hays hit two home runs, doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 8-1 win over the Dodgers.
Hays would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Hays earned 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with the Orioles and Phillies, finishing the season 70th among National League batters.
Hays had a Box-Toppers game score of +8.0 Monday, best among all Reds players and highest among all the day’s Player of the Game winners.
American League Player of the Day
Lazaro Montes of the Mariners hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-1, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 12-8 win over the Brewers.
Montes would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Montes has played in three minor league seasons but has yet to make his Major League debut in a regular season game and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
AL and NL Batters of the Day
There are no separate AL and NL Batters of the Day for Monday because the overall Player of the Day is batter Austin Hays and the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Lazaro Montes.
Notable
Joc Pederson of the Rangers has the highest 2024 Box-Toppers point total among Monday’s Player of the Game winners.
Pederson (HR 1-2 2R 3BI in the 11-3 win over the White Sox) earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with the Diamondbacks, 14th among NL batters.
Monday’s games
Fifteen games were scheduled for Monday, but six were cancelled because of rain. In Monday’s nine completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were three Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In four of Monday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Two games ended in a tie (Athletics vs. Royals and Rockies vs. Giants) and so no Player of the Game honors were awarded.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Hays would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Montes would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
